hi guys n guys
i have just picked up an old 1995 disco tdi 300
she has 400,000 ks under her belt and all seems fine was getting really really good mileage about 1000 klms to 70 liters of diesel .
but now it has developed a leak from the the injection pump seems to be running down the side of the pump from about 40 mm down
any idea's at all .
i am inclined at attempting a rebuild as i can get a seal kit from Sydney diesels for about 90 dollars and i have found a full step by step video for tear down and reseal on you tube
rod.

Yep, do it. The change to sulphur content in diesel (dropped) also changed the characteristics of the seals in the fuel pump.
If the seal kit contains viton seals, you'll probably fix the leaks.

I want to know how you are getting 7L/100km's.
Thats just crazy for a car weighing over 2t.
Best I ever had was 9.4L/100.
I did enquire was on prices on rebuilding a pump and prices varied between $300-$2200. Not sure why as diesel injection places seem to have a instant dislike to anything land rover.
Perhaps a 2nd hand one will do since the car has done quite some K's and a rebuild with such amounts may not be wise.

Aircon off windows down max speed about 80 KPH, gently on hills, drive early in the morning, late in the afternoon, keep to highway cycle
you can get a tdi300 D1 to 1000K out of the stock tank Every time that way.
I do.
Of course I also quote the fuel consumption for fozzy as liters of diesel per 1000Km, sometimes its down as low as 5 or 6 but then its also running on vege oil.

Thats pretty good.
Windows down though? That would increase drag-did you mean up?
On freeways I always try and go with the flow of traffic, if I come across someone usually towing a caravan doing 80 in a 110 or 100 zone thats just a accident waiting to happen.
Still, for economy sake, thats pretty good for essentially a brick on wheels.

im getting 700 klms till the light comes on with the leak and at idle its dripping 1 drip every 3 - 4 seconds seems to leak less with caltex .
seems to have issues with auto shift wont change up till 3000
if driven with part throttle say 2000 revs it wont shift even if you back of the poor kick down cable is a mess of wires that have frayed so needs attention and the speedo seem to read high by about 5 %

i paid 1000 for her with 2 months rego has nice alloys and newish tires
interior is bloody awesome for klms hood lining is hanging small clunk from rear suspension will check large ball joint on upper rear suspension arm.
she is my second disco and about 5 th rover i have a 84 rangy im wrecking she is a v8 auto was going to rego it was very tidy for the age rego able but worth more to me in parts

Rod,
I get the impression you want some answers on a 300tdi
in the disco2 section???
anyways, all you mention is a fuel leak ~40mm down the side of the pump????
not overly helpful? pics maybe? tech section maybe?
Anyways, it doesnt sound like the seal in the throttle pivot - which is pretty common, but it could be this???
It is not that hard to remove the pump. Reading the RAVE manual then a quick search would reveal:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-tutorials/55098-300tdi-injection-pump-retaining-tool-lrt-12-045-a.html
Pull the pump, have a play, what have you got to lose if the worst case end game is parting it out anyways?

Had the same in my 94 TDI, D1. Took it to a diesel fuel injector place, cost a fortune for a rebuild with new seals. Leak solved. It's common as they age. I should have had it reconditioned at the same time and would have been like a new engine, but money was tight.

I dont think a disco does weigh over 2 ton unless its covered in accessories

my 95 300TDi leaked under the top cover late last year and i took it off and then took it to a diesel pump place $900 later pump reco, no more problems.
i get 8.6l per 100km (calculated) on the highway and reckon on 960km for a tank of 89l, under 10l per 100km around town, accessories, TJM steel bull bar so weight maybe a smidgon ;) over 2 ton
