View Full Version : Intermittent bang when cornering

Hi all,
Since fitting new airbags I have noticed three times a loud bang when cornering on sealed roads. The first time it happened I turned right into local supermarket and I heard a bang/thud from centre/rear of vehicle, I assumed it was something to do with the gutter of driveway. Second time this noise happened I was turning left in the rain and I thought it was diff related. Today it happened for third time after doing some LR offroading with CDL engaged, I had travelled at least 5kms from last use of CDL with some gravel road, some sealed road and turned left on sealed road and the loud bang was back. To me it seems like some sort of wind up eg transmission releasing pressure, I have only noticed it since changing rear airbags but I am not sure if it related to CDL use or not. I am hoping somebody can suggest some things to look for. I have been underneath disco looking for loose bolts, bushes etc, and can't find anything obvious (I was thinking maybe ACE bushes). Vehicle is 2000 D2 V8 auto, Ashcroft CDL, 2" lift, no bar work.
Cheers Matt

Not much help but are you sure you seated the airbags correctly?

Pretty much a given, that if the noise wasn't there prior to the last component fitted......it should be the first thing to check and recheck.

Sounds like CDL is engaged. Happened to mine once, light wasn't on, the CDL was only slightly engaged not to light up. I have a manual twist type CDL & I was adjusting it & it twisted on slightly as it wasn't correctly lined up. This is when mine went BANG!! This happened over a year ago & no damage was done.

Thanks for the replys, it is definately not the seating of airbags, that was what I checked first and I have done plenty of flexing with no noises. I think it is possibly the CDL like DI5CO said, it is only intermittent and only happened three times in approx 1000kms. I will have to get under and see if I can adjust linkage on the ashcroft CDL.

Hey

It sounds like you have selected difflock then removed it but the mechanical linkage has held it still in but has put the light out.
You need to jack up 1 front wheel and rock that wheel to see if it releases if not you need to unscrew the diff lock switch on top of the transfer case to release the mechanism then re adjust the switch.

Hope that helps

Regards

Peter

ACE bushes will clunk when you swerve.

This evening I got under the car and adjusted the cable on the CDL bracket so hopefully this will ensure CDL is unlocking completely, thanks mechanic2you for the tips, when you say adjust switch do you mean mechanical adjustment or do you mean the electric switch (eg controls light on dash)? I'm hoping it should now be okay, as setting up correct operation of ashcroft lever was tricky on my own in the driveway as I found it would not always show engaged and disengaged without the car moving when I first was installing. Slunnie I was thinking it might have been the ACE bushes but it was just too intermittent.

Matt

The switch i am talking about is the one located on the top of the transfer case.

Difflock switch should operate on what is happening to the internals, not the linkage. If siwtch (& light) shows difflock is engaged when your linkage is moved over to full stretch then internally it is engaged. Equally if not illuminated then difflock is not engaged (unless your switch is duff!). Linkage may need adjustment but switch and light should be indicating what is happening internally, not just on linkage position.

Take a close look at your sway bar mounts, use a torch.
You may find some cracks in the sway bar mount that holds the rubber in place.
They are only bolted on one side, the other end just slips into a slot in the chassis.
