Thermo fan & viscous fan bearing bypass

Hi all

Turns out I need a new viscous fan bearing on the TD5 disco. I have read a bit on hear about removing the Viscous fan with a thermo fan and then use a shorter belt to bypass the fan pulley and thus not need to replace my expensive bearing that is spinning and needs holding in with some grub screws and loctite. So I was thinking lets ditch it all together and fit a Thermo.

I was thinking a Range Rover or AU Falcon one.

I was going to plug the whole with a welsh plug for neatness or just leave the bearing out. Then measure it with string and take my sting into the bearing guy to match the length. That is unless someone has done it before and can give me a part number.

Don't forget to allow for the adjuster to work when meashuring.
Maybe meashure the std. set up with your string and then compare to the existing belt.
This should show up the small amount of difference needed.
When the mod. is done allow the same for the new belt.

Cheap and simple. It cuts in at 82c Deg. at what stage should the fans cut in? Should I look for an adjustable one like this.

Hoping I can get a thermo fan from an AU from the wrecker on Wednesday.
I am hoping to be able to use the same output from the bleed screw as the engine saver by splicing into same wire. Do you think this will effect the engine saver as I still need that to work.

I would also like to use one of my empty switches on the instrument surround to be able to cut them out for when we go for a swim. Anyone done this before?

Am I missing something here? Shortening your fan belt to avoid the fan pulley takes the water pump out of your system. why dont you just unbolt the fan and fit your electric thermo fan......I'm assuming this is what you want to do......remove your annoying viscous fan that has a faulty bearing and put an electric fan in? I too have been intending to fit electric fans off the falcon but just havent done it.....waiting for the viscous fan to do something wrong first. I have also looked at fitting electric water pump but its seriously in the too hard basket for me. There is a post in here somewhere with step by step photos where a member fitted the falcon fans.

My hope of removing the pully that the fan sits on is the then I don't need to replace the bearing. I have bought a bearing but i am not confident that it is deep enough.

I haven't been able to find a post on fitting a fan to a TD5.

Also if I bypass the fan pully the belt will run from the power steering to the alternator. The fan is not connected to the water pump but I stand to be corrected.

The water pump on the TD5 motor is driven off the rear of the power steering pump.
The fan is mounted to on a bearing only and could be removed if alternative cooling is available.

Plan B is to remove the fan but leave the pulely in place, still gaining a few ponies.

If you are after a belt supplier, it is difficult to go past RP Wallis.
