Looking at buying a snorkel, and the Mantec job I'm thinking of getting can't have a pre-cleaner fitted. Apparently the Safari can take a pre-cleaner.
How essential do you think a pre-cleaner is?

I suppose it depends where you are going ! I you are heading into real dusty territory I'd say fairly useful, mine seems to collect plenty of dust in the bowl, for general running around/4WDing probably not required. Supposedly they restrict the air flow a bit but I've never noticed any difference in performance. (at least not on a defender)

We fitted pre-cleaners and Droopies (Snorkel Socks) on the 200Tdi & the SIII on our Simpson Desert Trip.
The Droopies picked up a lot more dirt than the pre-cleaners. The pre-cleaners were also susceptible to branch damage. As a result the paper air cleaner elments remained very clean.
On the 300Tdi Defender the Safari snorkel has a wider diameter than the 200Tdi snorkel did, and you can only get a 12" pre-cleaner for the 3" snorkel, which is asking for trouble. I don't know how compact the pre-cleaner for the Mantec is, but I'd recommend considering the Droopie as an alternative approach.

Easy enough to make an adaptor to fit the 7" to a 300Tdi Safari snorkel though.
