I've seen vertical wheel mounts as was done in the RR classic. I'm tempted to go that way and to get rid of the Kaymar rear bar and wheel carrier.

Here's what I did with mine.

When I go on long camping trips the spare wheel goes on the roof rack and a drawer full of camping gear goes in its place.

But Ron, hurry up and decide you DO want to sell me your rear bar and carrier!

Can you afford what I want for it? :D

Probably not, but the question remains. How much?

Do you want the wheel inside or outside the car?

My LPG installer did a fantastic job and put a wheel mount on top of the LPG tank, to I just put a bolt through the center of the wheel and its clamped to the floor in the back. I have put it on the roof on a few long trips to save in car space. And I also carry a few cans of goo for the occasional trip without the spare at all.

I dont actually have pictures of it believe it or not...and I am a few hours away from the car!

here's one of bee utey's, exactly the same as mine, bee utey gets all the credit!

Look in the top right corner you see the solid arm with a bulky nut welded on, then there's a hole through the floor/lift up wheel well cover and the tire sits in the back and has a large bolt through it and through the floor to the pictured mount.

Hey Ron you better put that bar/wheel carrier on e-bay... I reckon there are a few potential bidders ready to go to war for a genuine P38 Kaymar bar!

ideally i,d like it inside & upright to one side, to try & keep the avaiable space to a max!

Hmmm depends on your sizes, I found with the factory standard size tires/rim the wheels won't fit in that position in my car by nearly two inches, so I would have to either cut into the floor and put a divot in like the classic's, or move the back seat a bit.

I have seen a p38 with the wheel in that spot, I am not sure if trim was removed or modified or if the tire was just deflated.

Have you seen my earlier thread on this ? http://www.aulro.com/afvb/p38a-range-rover/101686-spare-tyre-location-sorted-out.html

There's ample room in the location mine is fitted. My wheels are 30.5" - well above the standard 29" wheels and there's still room for bigger - not sure 33's would fit though... There is a small gap behind the seat and the tyre (tyre doesn't touch seat) and about 2-3cm gap to the back door. It looks like the tyre will stick out a bit at first - but it is deceptive as the upper rear door is recessed once closed.

Mine is now covered with matching fabric to the rest of the interior. I've used two mounts - one screwed through the centre of the wheel into a bracket around the subwoofer and another bracket utilising the child restraint bolts. Combined they make it rock solid with zero movement - although either singly would work I was a little paranoid and used both. Been using it like this for over a year now - over all sorts of terrain.

Do have an lpg tank fitted down there or 32's are to big to fit in the hole?

I bet he doesn't have a LPG tank there or a very small one ;)

no lpg and the 32's are way to big to fit in the hole, i used to just leave the spare on the floor but after the speaker box went in it would no longer fit.
