front diff rebuild or kit?

I've been informed by my dealer that my front diff on the 06 se D3 has "excessive play" and will need to be replaced at $2000+ and labour. Is there an alternative?

Did you go to them with a complaint or did they pick up a problem during a service?

I'd be asking where the play is - if it's the bearings then a rebuild should be possible.

I asked them to investigate after getting a 'clunk' at low speeds when putting the power on or off. Thought it might have been the lower control arm bushes but that was the answer they gave me "excessive play". It was during a service so i assume they didn't go into it to thoroughly

I can't say I've heard of play in a front diff before. I know we've done a few propshafts for play/movement but I guess anything is possible.

Propshafts are more likely there is a bush/bearing in the rear which can be worn and cause a Klunk.

It was the official mob in Newcastle who gave that diagnosis. I might play it safe and spend the coin to get All4x4 to check it again. Unfortunately I don't have too many other options from where I live

You could try Teasdales at Singleton. They used to be a LR dealer & still work on them I believe.

There is an alternative. There are kits available. I've posted information on several boards, as neil_p would point out.

You can obtain the kit directly from the company who provides them in SA. They're a great bunch, offer front and rear bearing and seal kits, and crown wheel & pinion (redesigned) to cure whine issues. You don't have to use it if you don't want/need it. Contact Deon there, he will fix you up, and then you can go get the work done at a local reliable indy shop. They offer other LR drive train parts, gearboxes, etc. as well.
