Hi all,
Been looking at my swivel hubs today and they are leaking, gonna look at replacing seals and bearings but in the mean time am going to change the oil for the new grease. Should I order the oe Landrover hub grease or the Lucas hub oil?

Thanks

Do you have chrome balls or black?

If black, then you might have to stick to the LR (or equivalent) grease.

If chrome, then use what you like :). I'm an oil man myself.

They're chrome. Think I may go with the Lucas hub oil which is a sort of grease that clings.

I can't open the link for some reason but it should be OK IMO.

Go for the OEM LR "One Shot" it's only CV grease but you know you have the correct ammount in, and if the seals or balls are damaged then you can get away with it a little longer.

A great tip for repairing the chrome balls is to sand back the rust, and fill the hole with an epoxy glue, and then sand this back to the original level. Use something like a Dremel to remove the corrosion, use a rust stopper and this'll work for a few years, be careful when sanding the glue back.

Any recommendations where to get it from? Should I just call somewhere like CLR or all four x4?

Cheers

Kotara would have it in stock, if they're close to you. Otherwise CLR or Karcraft can send it to you.

Last time I was at Kotara, they had about 30 or 40 tubes of it on the bench. Must admit I need to do my swivels too, and my wheel bearings, and must do something about rotating my swivels, and................

I bought the Penrite equivalent Semi Fluid Grease.

SEMI FLUID GREASE - Penrite Oil (http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/greases/semi_fluid_grease)

What about a PTFE high temp high pressure grease? I have had great experience with PTFE greases and oils in industry.

What about a PTFE high temp high pressure grease? I have had great experience with PTFE greases and oils in industry.

I am not familiar with it, but the specific qualities quoted (high temperature, high pressure) are not required in this application, so there would seem to be little advantage. On the other hand, it may not have the qualities that are required, specifically the ability to flow readily at all operating temperatures so that the universal can act as a thrower to ensure lubrication of the upper swivel, and to flow into the unsealed CV joint. A desirable, but less critical property is to have exactly the right flowability, so that this requirement is met while the tendency to leak is minimised, and it is very unlikely that PTFE High temp grease meets this criterion. (in addition to the flowing properties, it needs to have a variety of not particularly special lubricant properties, but none of these matter if the lubricant does not reach the surfaces it is intended to lubricate, for example by having too high a viscosity.)
