View Full Version : Rangie Snorkel adaptor for 390 holley Impco 300

Another project still to be completed....About a year ago I relocated the 300a mixer back onto the top of the 390 Holley. (Yes it is dual fuel but that's what you have to do if you want to do any distance in this thing.)

Now I have a concern that I cannot keep water out of the engine especially when starting to do more High Country trips. I am not too fussed about cold air but reduced dust and mud load on filter is of interest.

Problem is I need a box around air cleaner/mixer with some tube spigots to join three inch hose for attachment to snorkel.

I cannot find one off the shelf ready to go. Anyone help? (I suppose a pic would be helpful)
I already have a bonnet scoop unfortunately, but there is not much room between the air cleaner and the bonnet part line / top of fire wall. I had hoped to fit the whole lot under the bonnet without a hole in bonnet but it just won't quite fit.

I relocated the mixer because it was right on top of the extractors and it was getting a real pasting when I went through mud and was lower than where it is now, despite the cast adaptor tube. Also the cantilever weight of the mixer and cast tube was loading the Holley too much despite support bracket.
Regards Old Rangie.
(PS still haven't fixed the engine noise at high rpm, just don't need to drive so quickly now...)

I have seen some plastic "clam shell" air filter covers over the years, often on old Ford F series vehicles. They would split open for fitting, then close to a 3 inch air inlet hose connection. Sorry no pics of that. Perhaps a wrecker specialising in old F trucks would have one.

Personally I suggest you get creative with tin, silicone and pop rivets or adapt an air cleaner case off an old carby V8 Ford.

Otherwise dump the 300 and use your offset adaptor, then plumb an Impco 225 inline mixer to an airbox. They are common on EFI cars, including factory conversions on VS to VY Commodores. The best thing with this conversion is your air filter replacement becomes a breeze, not a nightmare as it is on the 300A set-up.

This pic may give you ideas on a remote mounted 225. It would fit between the Holley adaptor hat and the air cleaner:

Bee Uty thanks again you must spend a lot of time on this forum....

I have looked briefly at the 225 idea. The reduced flow doesn't worry me but I do pull full revs on 4.6 a few times so I opted to stay with the bigger rating but the main issue is clearance from extractor exhaust and just above is converter/ then wiper washer box and external relay box for gas. Not much room for hose and that was to go into plenum and out the side below windscreen. Picture be good here.

A photo would show how busy it is.

Should have seen the NRMA guy's face...."Why don't you leave as standard, at least leave it so the existing system will work......" ans....cause it didn't work. MSD CDI with 50K volts at spark fixes a lot of problems and allows ignition upwards and beyond 20: 1 A/R on cruise.

But more thought, measure twice before cutting. At least I have the original bonnet yet to be cut after I have finished. Now I have the Defender I won't spend as much time on old mate Rangie, just drive it for a listen to that engine.

This is an air filter box similar to what bee utey is talking about. its off an ea falcon. i picked it up at the wreckers with the mixer & snorkel (suitable for fuel injection) for $30. as you can see my setup isn't any good for dusty conditions but you should be able to re-orientate the intake to suit.

Thanks Ahud, I still have the old bits and can make something like it but I took it off due to the position near the extractors and the damage it did to the Holley centre bolt and carby housing. Always a bit concerned about the seal of the adaptor to carby seal as well, because it all depends on the clamp force of that bolt which eventually pulled through and needed re-machining.
Looks like I am off to sheet metal place for materials and maybe some folding.
