Hi

2004 Td5 classic 164K

Have noticed over the last couple of days a new noise that I assume is coming from the turbo. There is a louder than usual whistle coming in on boost (1500 to 2500) that sounds like a high pitched football umpire's whistle. Normally I wouldn't question it as it not too bad except it wasn't there before.

The optimist in me says it's nothing and it will go away if I ignore it but the pessimist in me is saying it will soon need a new turbo.

Has anybody got any suggestions?

Definately sounds more like a classic leaking exhaust manifold gasket. Search 'Td5 exhaust studs' and you will find heaps of info.

Definitely broken stud or warped manifold.when mine started I swore it was a belt problem until seeing how common it is.sorry to hi jack but saves creating new thread,my turbo and has for a while,a strange fffft noise like a little bit of air escaping or something,right on the start of throttle then stops as you apply.I know that's really bad descriptions,but it's hard to describe!

Guys- how did we go with this? I've an '04 TD5 D2 188K and I've a whistle at low speed acceleration (under load).
Sounds similar.............

Had the same noise...turned out to be the exhaust manifold

A higher pitched whistle is more than likely a leak somewhere such as exhaust manifold. A more pronounced whine will indicate wear in a turbo. Or best bet, take air intake off and have a look at the impeller. If it has any sideways movement then it is likely rooted.

I've found that a very high pitch whistle/shriek at high revs 3000+ is a blown intercooler hose, so that's something else to check. I had exhaust stud, one hose and then the other, go in quick succesion, a matter of weeks.

I had the same noise about five months ago. Turned out to be exactly as described above. Two trips to the workshop (replaced exhaust manifold gasket and studs, second trip to fix the fact that they didn't re-assemble correctly and oil was going everywhere...) and a hefty labour bill later , fixed. Or so I thought. Driving up from Canberra to Sydney today.... Same noise. Less than six months and 10,000 km later. Could this be right or a stuff up somehow by the workshop? I am trying to work out how first one lasts a decade and 150,000km , next one less than 6 months and 10k?
Any thoughts?

Hope they used the bigger studs (10mm I think) or even better stainless steel ones.

And hope they replaced them all not just the broken ones.sounds fishy to me

My studs were all replaced with larger than original and I haven't had a hassle.

Coopers might be expensive but they do it right the first time.

Well, the invoice says that they did - and replaced the Manifold gasket and exhaust flange gasket. Surely it should have lasted longer?? What chance do you reckon that I make that point to the workshop?

Andy at hard range reccomended him, not used him myself yet but the water pump is due AGAIN!

I originally posted this thread last winter when my TD5 was making a noise similar to a rusty roller skate bearing above 2000 rpm but for some reason the noise disappeared for 12 months but now it is back again. Don't know if it is related to the cold but I rather think it is just something loose.

What's prompted me to repost is that tonight for the first time I experienced what I would best describe as an intermittent loss of power or huge turbo lag. It would drive ok for a minute or two then it would die again. Interesting thing is.......the noise was gone!

I got home, had dinner, searched aulro and tugged and pulled all the relevant hoses as suggested without finding anything I could attribute to the problem. I got back in the car, drove around for about 15 minutes and could not reproduce the power loss, the whistle/squeeky bearing noise was back though!

I can't see any evidence of exhaust leak and I believe from the previous owners receipts that the manifold bolts have been upgraded. I also believe that the car has been chipped and has a larger intercooler installed. The car drives fine apart from tonight's new symptom.

Can anybody suggest ways I can narrow down where the noise is coming from or things to check?

I can't reproduce it from revving, it has to be under load or while driving.

Just in case - also keep a close eye on your engine oil level, including checking the exhaust pipe for any "dripping".

Oils OK and no dripping.

The other thing I forgot to mention is when you flatten it for approx 10 secs the whistle/squeeking noised then dissappears. Almost like giving it some revs releases the pressure and the whistle stops. It returns soon after though.

I had noise and vibration when driving through 2000/2200rpm it turned out to be the transmission brake rattling. Replaced the T/Brake springs and all was quiet. I had to tidy up the junk in the back because you could hear it now.

The second noise was a whistle under load. I thought it was rotational. Intermittent nature meant it was hard to pin down.Turned out to be manifold stud.

Think this is what mine is doing. Would be easier to work out if I had a boost gauge.
But while under load above 2000rpm, I get a high pitch squeal like a idler bearing or a slipping belt. But if I hold the revs, once the load decreases slight the boost will drop even though the revs are the same. Thus less maniold pressure and the squeal goes.
Glad I ordered a inlet and exhaust gasket. Will give me something to do on my holidays.
Now to find a good thread on how to de stress the std manifold and then find some one that can machine it flat.

Was the screaming distinctly different from the whistle? Also what other signs were there that the turbo was cactus? I am just tryimg to determine if mine is a scream or a whistle. (got me worried now)

You will get a scream if there is the slightest of leaks.

My old 300tdi was on gas and the hose was very slightly loose and it screamed up every dune on the border track and half way home, I thought it was my turbo on the way out but when checking all the hoses at home, tightened the lpg line into the turbo and no more scream.

Update:

After doing lots of research I came to the conclusion that the leak was in the intercooler pipes as this would explain the intermittant loss of power if one was breaking up on the inside. I bought a nice set of blue silicon tubes and replaced the 3 relevant pipes. Took about 2 hours so it was a pretty easy job.

Drove aorund the bloke and the noise is still there, quieter but still there. Every now and then it's really loud though.

A couple of points
1.There is a lot of black oil in the pipes from the blow pipe
2.There is also a lot of oil around the EGR (Could this have a leak?)
3.Make sure you tighten the tube coming off the turbo REALLY tight! Mine blew off after a day. Scared the S**t out of me!
4.I now think it is exhaust related but just can't see any evidence of it

Did you have the manifold "planed" ie. ground flat before you refitted it?
I had to do this on my old 360 cu inch jeep.
The exhaust guy said the all warp over time

Yep I can do that. Well after a near catastrophe, as I forgot to re connect the oil line to the turbo. And proceed to dump 3lts of oil on the work shop floor.
But all is good. There is no noise now. Can just stand on the throttle and no whistle or high pitch whine.
Manifold needed to be machined flat. I replaced all the studs while it was off. Which is a good thing. As I broke the both studs on 1 and 5.

To a previous poster, The reason it goes away after a certain time of being on the throttle is that the turbo eventually spool's up and the pressure ins the exhaust drops off. Even though the turbo is still producing boost. But as soon as you get off the throttle then apply power again it will whine again.
When I brought my car. It was intermittent, so had only just started. Within a couple of hundred km's it pretty much did it all the time.

I thought it was the water pump or belt tensioner. Ended up being the exhaust manifold was warped and broken studs. Got the manifold machined and replaced the studs. All fixed.

The noise in mine has disappeared over summer just like it did last year, completely gone. As soon as it warmed up to above 15 - 18 degrees it stopped. I believe that mine is the exhaust manifold and that the larger temperature range from cold to running temp in Melbourne winter must warp it.

So out of hearing out of mind for the moment...until winter then I will be trying to fix it again.
