View Full Version : Series 2a buying advice

Hi All. I am looking at buying a series 2a SWB hard top diesel with rear pto fitted, she is a 1964 model and needs quite a bit of work. What do you think something like this is worth, are the pto's hard to find and are they a saleable item on their own? She also comes with a spare diesel motor. Having never owned a series 2 before I would apriciate some advise.
Thanks Simon

Thanks for the reply. I dont have any photos yet, I had a good look over the chassis and only found some slight rust in the rear cross member. She was last running about 4 years ago when a welsh plug let go and has been parked ever since, the breaks, wheel bearings and shackle bushes were all replaced prior to the engine failure. She spent all her working life on a farm near Buxton (VIC) running a pump with the
pto so has done a million miles parked next to a river. I know all the history for the car but she is in a sorry state and i dont have much of an idea as to what is should be paying. Most of the panels need some work but the car is very original which appeals to me.
The handbreak has given me a budget of $2000.00. Would I get something running and straight for that kind of money?

$2000.00 yes you should get a great truck for that..if series 2 or 3..we don't pay near that much and have running vehicles:) Now you just have to find them:D;) and of course you have, panel damage is a bitch to repair, alloy stretchers when panel beating and cost a bit to replace..

If it has been stationary for a long time it will be worth checking if the engine still runs - you should be able to start it despite the core plug issue - check the condition of the oil etc. to see if it was ever serviced.
Check also to see that the repairs you mention have actually been done.
Offer a low price and work upwards as necessary, after mentioning the car's bad points. I think the scrappie's were paying enough to make any wreck worth about $300+,

It is almost impossible to put a realistic price on a Series 2a - it depends heavily on condition, and on how many people want to buy it at a particular time. If the chassis and bulkhead are reasonably rust-free, then it is a rebuild proposition, probably worth $500 at least. If it is all there and in reasonable shape, and the engine runs, perhaps $1000, but from the sounds, this may not apply. As mentioned, scrap prices place a minimum of $300.
There is some sporadic demand for the rear PTO, and they fit all Series Landrovers (except those with a military crossmember and 107 wagons), and you should be able to get at least $500 for one in reasonable shape - but you might have it for a long time before finding a buyer, or it might go tomorrow.

Hi All. Had another look at the landy today, see the attached photos. I took your adivse and we started her up for the first time in 5 years. Started first go and ran like a swiss watch, just black smoke on starting and a little engine blow by. let me know what you all think

Looks pretty neat and tidy from the photos:)
It started but did it move??..things to consider...Clutch, brakes, radiator and the dreaded steering relay....all these can add up if needing repair, I dare say it will need all new brake hoses for a start:)
hope this helps;)
Mrs hh:angel:
ps. is that thing on the back a rear tyre swing away thingy...whats wrong with the bonet or behind the bulkhead..

Actually does not look too bad from the photos. The fact that the engine runs is a definite plus, probably a bit hard to assess its condition, but if it started easily and runs smoothly (well, to the extent the diesel ever did) there can't be too much wrong with it.
If the chassis and bulkhead are free of serious rust (try poking holes with a screwdriver in any likely looking spots!) - check bulkhead, particularly floors, around the vents, rear crossmember, front spring hangers, base of all the outriggers, and anywhere else that looks rusty - then you could consider a price of $1000 plus.
But you said you had a budget of $2000 - with this one, ignoring any surprises (and there are bound to be some) you can expect at a minimum to have to do the following:-
spring bushes, brake wheel and master cylinders, hub seals, just because it has been standing.
Likely costs - tie rod ends, swivels, ball seals, expect to have to replace some lights due to rusted sockets. Since you will have to remove springs to replace bushes (and derust and lubricate them), expect to have to replace at least some shackle bolts, U-bolts, centrebolts, possibly some shackles.
If you decide to repaint it, this is best done with it in bits - and if you do it yourself, the paint is not expensive - but some other things are, particularly the cost of replacing rubber bits such as door seals, wiring grommets, blanking plugs etc. There are a lot of these and the cost adds up - when I repainted my 2a, rubber bits were by far the highest cost.
All the above assumes you do the work. Refurbishing an old Landrover is labour intensive - and the cost will go through the sky if you pay someone to do this!
As I said, it looks a lot better than your intial description suggested.

Thanks All for the sound advise, the chassis and bulkhead look ok other than a little rust and damage to the rear crossmember which I can fix no worries. Having re built an Austin Champ many years ago(big job) I like the idea of working on a simpler car which you can buy parts for! I don't really know how far to go with it all at this stage, I would just like to preserve a landy and see how I go. :D I like the idea of parking it next to my Defender too!
As for the wheel carrier on the back? who knows what some people think;)

Yep, the PTO works no problems. I like the way you have to pop the bonnet to turn the heater water on and off! Doesn't get any simpler than that:D
I think I'm going buy her after taking everybody's advise.

Congratulation on your purchase, it looks pretty original and honest.
Running your chassis, gearbox and engine number through calVIN (CalVIN, the Land Rover VIN & Chassis Number Calculator & Decoder (http://www.clifton.nl/calvin.html)) can give you some answers, but can also confuse things in some cases.
How far are you thinking of taking the work? Just roadworthy or more restoration?

Fantastic thanks Sam, I will give it a go.
At this stage I'm just planning to preserve her and make her as original as possible. Once I can properly asses her condition things might change. First priority is to remove the roof and anything not original, give her a clean and fix the water leak and breaks. Then I will be able to drive her and get a feel for what else I'm up against. I'm time "poor" so it will be a slow process;)
When she makes it home I will upload some more Photos

Carolyn,
I have a thing against this method....
my 88 2a served with an infantry unit in Vietnam....it was in the ARMY
at that time no females were in infantry units in the ARMY therefore VET is a male, this dispels your theory unless there is a military vehicle exemption to your rule!! :)
Simon , sorry about the thread jack there!

Nice find and a very good price!
The springs look a little rusty so jacking Mary up and resting her on chassis stands, whilst the axle hangs, will allow you to brush old oil onto them to improve the ride. You will find the ride compared to your Champ and Defender rather harsh if you don't do this,
Cheers Charlie

Probably impossible to tell unless you (or someone) can locate some original paperwork.
With practice, the hardtop takes around an hour to fit (in those pre-seatbelt days), and would have been fitted to order, quite possibly by the dealer. Along the same lines, it may have got a hardtop at a later date. It seems to me that the side windows are larger than normal, suggesting a station wagon hardtop, but a station wagon had a side opening one piece door at the back, and deluxe trim, neither of which your's has. This would suggest that it was a later addition, although obviously the windows could have been changed at some time.

I worked on my friend's Champ in the '80's and was most impressed with the ride and comfort; in fact it had the most comfortable ride I have ever experienced in any 4WD! It was also the most impossible machine to work on and I include the Mini in that assessment!

G'day VK3UTE :)
If that chassis No is 27300350 it would be the 249 th 1961 diesel 88 fitted with the 2.25 diesel motor, and the photo shows that it has had the roof and sides fitted to bring it to Station Wagon standard and the heater, hand throttle were all accessories available at the time,if it has the lined rear roof it would certainly have been taken from a wagon, it is a nice original vehicle that has been updated and improved to wagon standard by the owner as parts and funds became available, done so often by farmers of that era :) I would suggest that you leave it complete as is and treat it to a coat of Landrover Bronze Green so it looks the bees-knees :D
BTW. The water tap under the bonnett is the original way the heater was activated, it is probably a Bosch but may be a Landie original, these were available as accessories in the 50'&60's before heater/demisters became law

I think you are correct with respect to the roof. She has a lined roof in the front half which makes sense with respect to your comments. I am picking her up this weekend and after more discussion with the current owner he is throwing in the original owners and service manuals as well as a collection of new spare parts.
I am suprised she is a 1961 model as i had been told by the owner she is a 64 but I guess that does not make any difference.

If you want to check the year -- look at the glass manufacturer sign in the bottom corner of the glass. there is a small dot below (above) the main brand name letters - that is the year, obviously max 10 letters so dot on first letter would be 61 - I know it's a bit fishy & It's a long time since I have looked but it seemed to work when I was looking for a 2a back in 1974 just the memory has faded:). Also shows in the glass has been replaced.
Anyway I'm sure someone on here will comment on this strange theory.

Oops! :( I made a big Boo-Boo on that chassis No, 27300350 would be the 349 th and not the 249th 1961 diesel RHD CKD, sorry about that only one digit out, but incorrect by 100 vehicles:bangin:
The chassis sequence start at ***00001 on any model or type run in the Series vehicles and the Suffix letter after the No denotes all and any changes during production, my chassis No endswith a "D"suffix so it has recieved 4 production changes in the 2a LWB chassis manufacture run.
Stevep has the right idea, if the door windows have "Armourplate Safety Glass" in asmall circle etched on them above the Armourplate will be a small dot, that indicates the date the glass was made, and was the standard way dealers and traders dated a car, read 4 windows on a sedan and it would give you it's age, so a seller could not fool a dealer that his Holden/Falcon or what ever was 59 when 3 glasses read 57,with VW beetles you counted the turrets on the castle on the bonnet badge !!

That is a nice original 2a SWB :D when you say "core plugs" do you mean the tap in ones down the side of the block or the Aluminium screw in ones at the rear and on the top of the head,as if one of these have gone the others aren't far behind :( I had the one at the back of the head fail, and finished up having to replace the other 4 on top of the head (under the rockers) these core plugs have "conduit thread" which differs from common AF or Metric, the plug at the rear of the head is the same as that used in the 300TDI ;) but the others differ, the threads in the head usually need to be cleaned with a "Thread File" a slow job.

Nice photos of Mary - she looks good in her new shoes.:)
I need some new tyres for my 1958 swb ute "Cowra", & it still has the standard size swb rims -- So what size tyres & brand did you get?
thanks
Steve

Hi Steve. I decided to go with LWB 5 1/2" rims and run 7.50 16, the larger diameter makes her a little faster. I,m thinking about changing the speedo as well to keep everything correct.
As for tyres I looked everywhere to find something that looked close to what would have been on her originally, not much to chose from. Bar treads look fantastic but they are bloody terrible to drive on:( and I wanted radials. So, I took out a second mortgage(a helpful thing if you own land rovers) and had 5 new Michelin XZL's fitted with new tubes. Other than the pain in my back pocket I could not be happier with them and I think they look perfect, the side walls have a real 1960's look.
I don't think you can get XLZ's in 6.00 or 6.50 which you will need if you want to keep the original 5' rims. Antique tyres have both those sizes in bar treads if you like cross ply tyres and they would look the part:)

G'Day all.
Took Mary away for her first 4WD trip last weekend, 4 days in the high country. She went like a champion, I didn't put a spanner on her. We even had the pleasure of winching a land cruiser out of a river:tease:

Check out the below link(I can't get the video to up load?), he was stuck on a rock in the Goulburn River. We used the capstan winch 3 times over the trip, it's very quick, easy to use and surprisingly strong:eek:

Excellent!
Love the last comment 'look at the water coming out the doors' - obviously not a landy owner!

Hello from Brisbane.
Like others have said several times over - great photos.
I would genuinely encourage you to share them globally - submit them to Land Rover Monthly or Land Rover Owner International in the UK for publication in the their "Land Rovers out and about" columns. Simple as an email with attachment.
They give a monthly prize for first and second, which can be a bit subjective. However, from what I have seen winning of late any of those that you have posted here would be likely to be both published and probably win the month's prize - especially photos 2 and 3. You may need to crop them in a couple of instances to get the truck into the centre of the frame - photo 4.
If you don't already take those particular mags get your newsagent to order them in and see what is involved. The nice thing is that you don't need to be a professional photographer as the main thing is to get a Land Rover into a nice frame doing something interesting - especially somewhere outside the UK and in the scrub/bush/jungle.
For what it is worth, a fairly basic photo of a D2 at Carnarvon Gorge came second in the last issue of LROI.
Cheers,

Thanks for that LWB123, I haven't seen either of those publications before. I have a heap of photos from the trip some of which are as good as those I posted, i might try submitting some and see how I go.
