View Full Version : All Terrain tyres
FL2 Td4

Hi guys, I'm looking for a set of all terrain tyres for my Freelander 2. As far as I know, only Pirelli Scorpion ATR has the size 235/60/R18, and most of the tyre shops don't have them in stock. Does anyone know any other brands make 235/60/18 all terrain tyres?
Is it ok to fit 255/60/18 on stock Freelander 2 18 inch rims?
Cheers

Legally you could only go to 245/60/18 as you can only change total diameter by 15mm. Any bigger and you need an engineer certificate. If you aren't legal then your insurance is at risk. I'm pretty sure that 245 doesn't rub anywhere and fits in the spare well but don't know about bigger. I only have 17's and Yokohama Geolander A/T-S which have been very good tyres. I don't know about them in 18's.

I wish I didn't get the 18 inch rims at the first place. There aren't any choices for me with 18s, I can only find Pirelli and Goodyear make All terrains tyres in 235/60/18. Goodyear has to be ordered and import from oversea, which is expensive. Pirelli Scorpion ATR is ok, I have been quoted $290 each, but not in stock either.

$290 is pretty good. Coopers or the Geolanders in 17" are over $300 each. I've only heard good things about the Pirelli's but not tried them on any car. They don't look 'off road' enough for me but looks can be deceiving.

My wifes friend has a new FL2 and they have continentals fitted.
I never looked if ATR's but they were dead quiet.

I also have the 235x60R18 tyres and have also been researching the options.
I did consider alternative sizes such as 255x55R18 (which would work nicely with the speedometer), but the legality question raised below is interesting.
So, short of buying 17" rims, I stuck with the original size and came up with a list of options:
- Michelin Latitude Tour HP
- Pirelli Scorpion Zero
- Pirelli Scorpion AT
- Yokohama Geolander H/T-S
- Goodyear Wrangler HP AW
- Goodyear Wrangler ATR
- Continental ContiCrossContact UHP
- Bridgestone Dueler D400
- Kumho KL51
- Kumho 798
Prices range from around $200 for the Kumhos to $400 for the Michelins. Also, I spoke with someone at Pirelli and it sounds like they don't manufacture the AT as well as the ATR in this size any more. So, if you can buy it somewhere, it's probably old stock.
From the above list, there aren't too many All Terrain options - only Goodyear and (old) Pirelli have options.
Given that I don't do much off-roading, I'll probably go for the Yokohama Geolander H/T-S tyres. They seem to have a good reputation under the dealers. The Goodyear Wrangler HP AW and Pirelli Scorpion Zeros (original on the Discovery 4 19" rims, but some guys on tirerack.com and other sites complain about less than ideal mileage...) also seem good. I currently have the Continental ContiCrossContact UHPs on, but I'm disappointed with the mileage I got out of them.
Hope this helps.

While I have Geolander A/T-S on my car and have found them to be excellent, I have previously had Geolander HT's on a Subaru and thought they were rubbish. The tyre guy had to really do a hard sell on me to convince me to give the A/T-S a go. The HT's were really soft and I ripped one up just on a gravel road. Mileage wasn't great either.

I have a range rover in the UK and fitted pirrelli scorpions on it but I had 2 sidewall blisters so do not recommend them and also they are nearly worn out at 15000 miles.
I also hsd some Toyo open road on it and they lasted for the 30000 miles and stil have some good milage left in them.
The two tyres that failed i replaced with Honkook snow and mud tyres as i was in Macedonia at the time and they ere the only option i could get but they preformed well and still have plenty of tread on themThe size that i use is 255 55 18 as they were factory fitted wheels.
The other option you have is to fit 16 inch wheels with higher aspect ratio tyres and i am looking at doing that on my range rover as i think the ride will be more comfortable and also the tryes will be cheaper.
