Hi Bob, we got ours 12 months ago , pretty happy with it so far although we had a fuel contamination problem which cost the insurance company $ 5500.00 to fix. Also over the weekend while preparing for our desert trip found contaminated oil in the front diff, I suspect a leaking hub seal allowing the oil and grease to mix ( I Hope thats all it is) will take to the dealer tomorrow. Apart from that so far a very capable vehicle

Wouldn't bother. No LR-Toyo-Nissan keeps diff and swivel/hub oil seperate. Pat

I have heard fuel contamination from remote fuel outlets is a growing problem with all common rail diesel engines. Some owners have invested in a funnel with filter fitted to pre-filter fuel before it reaches the tank.Don't know how effective it is in fixing the problem. Bob

I thought they were standard equipment, they were on all Land Rovers in 1985.

That's the one, sounds like it's recommended. The mag. 4wd action no. 157 has an article on common rail diesels, and in particular a 3L GU Patrol that had a complete engine shutdown in the middle of the Simpson Desert. After Nissan inspected the fuel pump, it was found scoring marks in the injector pump caused it to fail, the source put down to poor fuel quality.Nissan declared it was not covered under warranty ,because water and poor fuel quality, and not mechanical failure, was the cause. The vehicle had 40,000 km's, the entire fuel system needed replacing, cost... $10,000. It was recommended owners of all diesel driven vehicles fit an inline diesel water trap and secondary filter , looks like a funnel fuel filter could be a good investment as well. Bob.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but the progression of engine makes [ diesel] for the Defender would be .. 300TDI, TD5, 2.4 TD. Sorry about the questions, but I'm considering the future purchase of a Defender, currently have a TD5 Discovery, and I'm aware of the potential problems of that engine, [ happy with mine atm.] dont know anything about the 300TDI, OR 2.4 TD. I just want to be aware of potential problems before I make a decision .Cheers, Bob

Bob, the puma (code name for ford engine) was introduced in 2007. It's a 2.4 common rail that produces around 90kw of power.
I believe the TD5 BMW donk made around the same power.
The puma has a 6 speed box that marries quite well to the motor. The same motor and box have been used in Ford Transit vans in the UK for some time. I have heard 500 000klm is possible but that is only hear say.

I'd imagine being a common rail it is more allergic to water than previous deisels. However I believe a different line through the deepest of water, and good maintenance there should be little issue.
I have added Fuel Doctor to my diesel from new, and will be fitting a second water trap soon.

If you sniff around the forum a few have hit the 70-80K klm with their pumas now, and have not had engine or gbox issues.
Of course if there is issues outside of warranty then the costs can add up. But this generally relates to any vehicle post 2000.

So if you want to accelerate up a hill, with the air con on, and have a conversation as well as listening to the radio, a PUMA is not so bad.

Had mine for 3 months its a 2008 model, so far I have had the clutch replaced, vacuum pump replaced, steering pump replaced, but it has done 24 000k's. The speedo stops working occasionally too, landrover tell me that they can only fix it when it stop working completely, the waranty runs out this month!

This could create some argument, but my understanding is that this is a Land Rover engine, albeit fitted during the time that BMW owned the company.

I second that;)

The TD5 was developed by Land Rover, however I believe the release of the TD5 coincided with BMW taking over Land Rover.

I'm sure, if this is incorrect, I will be taken to task:(

If indeed it is true would that mean the TD5 was the last of the Land Rover developed engines?

Yes the TD5 was designed by Land Rover, the cylinder head design by Magna Steyr ! :D
