Has any one had serious gearbox and diff leaks after doing an off road drive? The rear seal of the gearbox was replaced about 3 mths ago, no idea on the diff. The the box weeped oil but nothing serious. The diff had no leaks. Now after one off road run (14 creek crossings) the gearbox is pouring out and there is a huge spray arc around the diff drive shaft seal.
Are seals my only problem or have I possibly got bearing issues as well?
Any advice?

I am pulling my hair out trying to reduce the puddles of oil on my drive way and no matter how much I do, something else leaks. :(

Dunno about the gearbox, but for the diff it's probably the pinion oil seal. They don't seem to last that long - but they're fairly easy to replace. You might need to replace the driving flange as well, as the seal will wear a groove in it over time and if the seal shifts at all under stress, it starts to leak. Also make sure the bearing has the right tension when reassembling. If the bearing is loose, it will groove the flange and wear the seal out more quickly.

cheers

I'd also check the breather. If the diff has suddenly spat out a lot of oil during a run, it may not have been able to breath; maybe the breather valve is clogged up.

I agree with the others.

The breathers can be unscrewed from the axles and washed in a tin of petrol; shake them vigorously until you can hear the ball rattle freely. I think it is a good idea to wash them at least every service, depending on how often they get covered in muck.

The flanges can be repaired with a Speedi-Sleeve but it is worthwhile comparing the new part price with the cost of the sleeve first.

Where is the gearbox leaking from?

you've been wading, deep ??

i'd check your oils and see if they're contaminated, i suspect water inside the diff and transferbox won't help the longevity of the seals

If the rear gearbox output flange nut is not done up to 80 ft/lbs then the shaft will move and flog out the seal, and the speedo drive will slip, this is the first indication of the nut being loose, awavering speedo, the diff pinion nuts the same 80 ft/lbs, but I would sreiously check both diff breathers, and oil for water, also the G/box and transfer case for water.

I will have to check the diff pinion flange for wear. I did not use a torque wrench to do the rear gearbox nut up, so maybe it is not tight enough. I have had nill speedo issues though. I have remote diff breathers mounted clear of any water and spray.
I will pull the diff flange out this friday and have a look, and put a new seal on the gear box rear and torque up to 80.
Thanks.
