Question regarding End of warranty Date

This may be a stupid question, but.

Does the standard factory 3 yr warranty on my D3 run out;

1. 3 yrs from the build date?

2. 3 yrs from when the vehicle was first registered?

3. 3 years from the date I purchased the vehicle - noting in my case it was a demonstrator with 1,500 km on the clock and there had already been registered?

I am guessing it is 2 but just wanted to check as that date is coming up at the end of the year.

In theory, it's 3 years from the date of registration.

In practice though, that could be out by a day or so depending on what the dealer told LR.

Just call a dealer & they can check it for you on LR's system.

It's supposed to be three years from the date the vehicle was first sold to a customer bearing in mind there are rare occasions when vehicles are sold but not registered (eg. agriculture or mining). I have however been caught up in my dealer's fiddling the numbers. Sometimes dealers report cars to LR as having been "sold" in order to make up numbers at the end of a sales period. Then they actually sell the vehicle perhaps a few weeks later. I had all the paperwork of the sale as having been transacted on a certain date but Landrover refused to believe this as their records showed the vehicle as having been sold a month earlier.

Naturally this discrepancy was discovered in the middle of a warranty claim so I had to push the issue. Landrover backed down and gave me another three months extended warranty and 12 more months roadside assist to their credit.

3 years from the date of you signing and accepting the vehicle.

Ie I ordered my D4 in Feb, it's in Brisbane now, being registered on Friday and I pick it up on Saturday. After inspecting the car I'll sign the paperwork and the warranty starts from then.

Maybe it is just a local dealer procedure here rather than Land Rover, but all my routine dealer service invoices have the Warranty Expiry Date typed in.

In other words, everytime my 3 is in being serviced, the invoice that I receive, along with serial number etc, has the Warranty Expiry Date also typed there, and in my case, 26MAY2009, and it still shows a couple of years later on all recent service invoices.

Buying an extended warranty ? The cost of an extended warranty here is in the range of four to five thousand dollars for about 3 years so not very attractive. There is no Ford or Land Rover warrenty available, only private ones.

I probably have spent that amount in the last couple of years, but for the most part, the broken stuff probably would not have been covered but considered wear items. The air compressor and the wiring looms perhaps, but not the front end stuff or tranny filter change or the brakes or the windscreen or the ...

What one buys the warranty for is to protect one from a major drive train failure, and my thoughts were that the engine, tranny, and differentials are actually for the most part, pretty reliable. So far I have been correct.

Also a real problem is that one has no enforcement mechanism - you pay the premium up front and then hope that nothing happens and it is a waste of money, or you hope your continuing good relationship with the dealer continues so that at least someone "might" help with claims.

Also at least here, if one purchases the warranty, in a practical sense, that just about precludes having an independent service your 3. In my case, there really are no independents who know how to even spell Land Rover so that is not much of a concern, but Australia is very different in that respect. (The independents seem often know more than the local dealer.)

The vehicle warranty starts when the vehicle is first registered.
Regardless of owner, Demo, Sales vehicle, Service loan vehicle etc etc...

It is there - go into to Topix and type in your VIN and it will tell you what the start date is for the warranty - irrespective what the basis for that date was - that is what Land Rover will work off.

Still weighing that one up. I know there has been a bit of discussion about the usefulness or otherwise of the extended warranty but my mind is not yet made up.

No my question was prompted more by the fact that I know it is coming up and simply want to plan for it a little bit.

I didn't want to folk out over 2 grand , but since I've had both diffs ( km40K ) replaced and that wouldn't have been cheap , it only needs
one fair repair ( air comp , ZF , diffs again etc ) and I break even.
I use an Indy and they're only $250ish a service ( which would cost
me about $100 for materials to do myself ) so I opted to go with a 36month
extension on this ticking-bomb .
