After removing what was left of the origanal
vent seals on my ser 2a project, I have siliconed
in the new ones but find that they only shut about
half way now. The new seals don't have a rebate in them
to accomidate the lip of the vents so they jam
as you try and shut them. Should I make my own
recess or will they bed themselves in eventually ??
Any advise would be apprciated.

I bought a set of Britpart vent seals from LR Series, and had exactly the same problem.

I ended up going to Clark Rubber, and buying some sticky backed rubber strip, and using that. It was a bit fiddly getting the corners cut right, but it worked out ok in the end.

I can't see the vents bedding themselves in, you'll either need to cut the rubbers you have, use Clark Rubber replacements, or find a source of seals that fit.

Scott's Old Auto Rubbers might be worth a try.

You could also check with fwd.com.au - they don't have the originals that go on the firewall anymore but they do have the later ones that go on the vent itself.

Thanks for the advise, I think I will try and cut a groove myselfand hopefully not make a botch of it. Will let you know how I go.

I tried the Clark Rubber route but it didn't work for me. One vent isn't sealing at all and the other is marginal. Possibly because the rubber was too stiff.

I bought some new seals and am going to try this (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/remlr-projects/111187-113-372-a-8.html#post1447976) method.

I did finally finish installing the seals and ended up useing a stanley knife to carefully make a 5mm cut into the new seals with the vents shut. As the hinge section gets in the way I pulled the hinge pin out and let the panel hang out of the way and use a ruler to finish the incision. Then using the ruler again make another cut 5 mm above the first one to form a v rebate as the vent wants to pull upwards as it retracts into the seal. It took me a couple hours to do as it is such a finicky task but Im happy with the end result. Why Britpart dont make the seals with the rebates already in them is beyond me.
I have found many times when I have ordered parts for my 2a that they were infact generic and I have had to modify them to suit so dont think that your newly arrived parts are going to bolt straight on.
Ill try and include a photo as im still learning how to use this forum.

I cut my seals longditudinally (sp?) with a Stanley knife making then roughly half as thick, as there was no way the vents would close without cutting.
I glued the rubbers into position then shut the vents from the outside to get them to fully close and left them shut for about 5-6months.
The seals have now conformed to the vents and I can open and close normally with the vent handles.

I went to fit mine yesterday, which I think I bought on ebay, only to find that they had perished in the box

I guess one advantage of these newer ones is that they don't cop the weather and perish as quickly as the old bulkhead-mounted seals. I'm going to give these a go.....

I'm about a week away from fitting new vent rubbers and reinstalling the vents myself. This thread has been quite timely :BigThumb:

My experience on the '73 S3 today

Said to son I'll just glue these on , bit of Kwik grip etc

After the initial seating of the seal with glue , getting the vent onto its hinge requires two people , one to push hard the other to carefully tap the lubed pin in.

Long story short , the Britpart ones work but you need two people , one to push and one to pull the lever. Going notch at a time it's possible to ease the seal into place against the flap. We used a plastic ruler, plastic spoon and fingers to mm by mm winkle the seal flush , overlapping the cowling slightly all around.

At the bottom I will need to inject a little more glue but I reckon I can do this with the vent shut. And it will remain shut until spring!

Added difficulties?
Went to look online for a solution, but internet was down. Don't you hate that?
It was dusk , dark (LR is outside) and cold.
I was standing on the front tyre. Not a job to tackle if your back is remotely bad...

And it's a bit of a fiddle attaching the levers underneath if you start with everything in bits!

The LHS vent has lost one of it's hinges, but that's a job for another welder and another day!

I must have been lucky with the set I got, they were Britpart but fitted with no chopping and the only challenge was putting the glue on the seals and bulkhead without it going everywhere.

Hi jdobson,
Is your Landy a series and have you tried shutting the vent after glueing the seals in place? I didn't realise I had a problem until I had installed them then tried to shut the vents the following day. I had no idea it was going to be such a fiddly job. One of the previous posts said he fixed the seals to the vent rather than the bulkhead which I didn't think was an option as I had to scrape out the remnants of the old seals from the recesses in the bulkhead.
Like I said earlier, after a lot of unexpected extra work I'm happy with the end result and have thrown in a photo of the finished results.

I glued mine in then promptly shut the vents as tightly as possible. Perhaps the quality / size of the Britpart replacements is not consistent and I just got lucky. It did take me a long time removing the old rubber seals - they were well and truly stuck to the bulkhead. And yes, my Land Rover is a Series IIA.

Thanks for the reply and I have taken your advise and shut the vents up tightly so they get a better seal. Now to finish of the door seals but that's a whole nother story and blog.;)
Cheers

Door seals are next on my list, can anyone recommend a supplier? I've heard you can fit Defender ones but this involves cutting the lip off the bulkhead - I'd rather avoid any cutting if possible.

Thanks

I bought mine from Paddock - so far they haven't disintegrated but they do prevent the doors from closing easily. I think if I pack the hinges with shims it might sort the problem,

I got mine from Paddocks as well. By the metre rather than trying to work out which part no is which precut piece. Just glued it on with no more nails (clear), shut the door and left it shut for a week or so to ensure and good bond and to compress the foam.
Been on a year now with no sign of coming unstuck and the seal fits beautifully.
Not that its any use as Bill has no roof or door tops, but the rego man said I had to have em [bighmmm]

I got mine from Paddocks - by the meter too! again too lazy to sort out part numbers etc. Unfortunately I didn't put them on in a good enough fashion to form a water/dust/finger proof seal! (I used pop rivets to hold mine on) So I might as well pull the roof off while it's raining for all the good the seals do.
