Hi all,

Just returning home and my Disco has died?!?
All was well when the revs dropped to 1000 and no throttle response, I pushed the acceleration flat to the floor and the rev counter went to 2000 then stalled. The car now tries to turn over but won't fire!

I've had to leave her at the side of the road! All help appreciated to get her home to be looked at!

Phil, its probably a dead fuel pump so not really feasible to change on the side of the road.
Sometimes they will start again when given a rest but probably not. Just the brushes worn out as your car has done 200KK or so.

Unfortunately I am tied up in the morning. Where is the car? I think you will have to join the NRMA and they will tow it home or to a workshop.

Thanks Philip,

I'll try and get it home in the morning and get a fuel pump ordered. If not, NRMA it is and home. Is replacing the pump an easy job? Looked in Haynes and except the special spanner all seems relatively simple.

can you give the tank a good thump?

Would that give the pump a kick up the arse?

Could the misfire and this all be linked?

assuming its the V8

remove the kick panel in the drivers footwell on the right hand side and check the relays there.

its going to be fuel and it may also be the fuel filter, they go one of 2 ways, gradually over a period of time or with an instant collapse.

you dont need the special spanner to get the ring out, mostly I do them by hand, wrap the access hole with a towel before you try that technique tho.

It could also be the dreaded 'spider'. My 300Tdi would cut out at the most inopportune time, like a right-hand turning lane, or an intersection. She would just lose revs, then stall. No amount of cranking would bring it back to life. There was turning, but no firing, so first thought was the fueling. But left for 5-10 mins, she would start up without a drama.

This happened several times, then I managed to wrangle the spider out from behind the console, and took to it with the soldering iron. Never had a drama since then....well not at least with random stalling:D

Actually just took delivery today of the little black box replacement for the spider, so have a job for the weekend. That, and replacing the transmission temp sensor which failed up in the Vic High Country

mRNA say it appears to be the module as coil is getting no signal! Any ideas how much?

Ah, the dreaded Lucas disease again. How many do you want? I find its safer to remove them before they blow up. There's a few rattling around my shed, I could express post a couple. Cost of postage only.

Or do it properly, lookie here:

Thanks for the help and suggestions guys, as always you have proven to be an asset to us all.

Module should arrive tomorrow so I can fit it and get back to normal. (this includes the pipe work planned for Sunday.

While i think on, I removed the drivers door lining and am struggling to reseat it, should I do the exact reverse of removal or should I remove the "plugs" from the door, attach to the liner and then push in?

Cheers and thanks again

Hi all, hope everyone had. Good day.

I was wondering if anyone could point me in h right direction to find my ignition module? New part arriving tomorrow but would like to find the old one so I'm prepared. Hav looked near the coil to no avail, so where would it be?

Car is a 94 built in the march, evidence seems to suggest that all 94's an 95's hav the same module.

Thanks
Phil

It will be on the side of the dizzy. If not there under the coil

That may be why I couldn't get a timing pulse from your plug lead! But maybe its my old light has died. I haven't checked yet.

Thanks Philip,

Found it! Now to figure out how to get at it, bolts appear to be 5mm (smallest spanner I have is 6mm, have sockets but can't get them in) I'm guessing I need to remove the dizzy completely?

Man, land rover don't half like making things difficult!

Yes, you need to remove any plugs that have stayed stuck into the holes in the door.

They can be absolute buggers to get out sometimes.

I use pliers and a flat blade screwdriver.

Use the screwdriver to wedge in behind the tab type of bit that attaches to the door skin, then lever them out bit by bit until you can get the pliers around the threaded bit and pull them out.

Put all the plugs back on the door skin and then just line them up and press them in.

You can get the amp out but its far easier with the dissy out. Remove the cap, mark the position of the rotor arm. Estimate/measure the clearance of the vac advance from the thermostat housing. Undo the dissy clamp from the front, on a serpentine engine you remove the top portion of the rad cowl. On the vee belt engine remove the alternator tensioner arm. Then remove the dissy and mark the spot which the rotor turns to. This is the spot you need to be at to reinstall the dissy. Reverse order for refitting!
