I thought I would post up these pics as a reference for anyone contemplating an Auto conversion.
Currently on Ebay there is a Puma engine & 6 speed g/box on offer @ $11,500
Not mine, anybody here?. Looks a very professional job, even a new speedo.

I would normally put this elsewhere, I might stick it in Marketplace Alerts, it's here as I find it an interesting conversion & would love to hear more about it.

I bet it is still 4x4, job looks to professional (right down to display chassis on wheels) not to be....4x4 Low
Range is proabaly activated by one of those 9 switches on the dash

Looking at his Ebay history, he bought a LS1/2/3 engine cover. Also sold his rear diff c/w locker as he "upgraded rear axle"

Hope he reads AULRO..

I agree, it is the PUMA engine,

But who has a spare chassis on wheels hanging around to put your old motor/gear box on, unless your really heavy in to it, it just looks very professional.

Yep - and as much as I love Defenders, adding the cost of one of these to the $60K odd for the Puma ad it all starts to be a bit frightining and into D4 territory.

My thought exactly , might as well get a D4 In NZ a defender is $72000 , they wanted $85000,, Discovery from memory around $90000 upwards here.

Future cheaper auto conversion : Ford territory tdv6:D
They only come in auto. All you will need is one that has been rear ended, side impacted or major hail damage to get a D3 2.7 tdv6. These have just been released in Oz and will soon be flooding the school pick-up's and shopping centres near you.

look forward to it Tristan:) with any luck you working in brissy means that you might live in Sydney which also means you could (if you wanted to) put it down the quarter mile against CAL415 who also has an LS2 but in a county his looks at similar stages to yours that way we can see the auto against the manual...wooop wooop :D

its running an 80 series transfer case. He is a member on here. Hope he does a write up.
The other day in Melb i saw a new AMG G wagen ($217K) with a 5.4lt V8. I think i would rather the chev PUMA and keep the change.....

Where to start? I have had a few guys message me about the conversion since I listed the TDCi, a guy putting an LS3 in a Discovery, another LS2 in a Defender and even Grover (Hi) Great to see!!!
So, it did start with an LS2, I swapped it for the 6.2 shortly after the first couple kay’s mainly for power, LS2 has little heads and the LS3 lists a few other worthy upgrades. I used the 4L65, 4L80 to heavy.
I fitted a constant 80 series t-case mainly for strength, Marks kit to stuck the two together. There is no low range lever, it is pneumatic with redundancy.
PWR radiator
PWR trans cooler
GMPP e67 EMS
CompuShift trans controller
Paddle shift via SV6 steering wheel
Commodore ancillary kit
Auto meter gauges (Factor dash is predominantly CAN feed from EMS)
3.8 KAM diff gears
ARB centers
Hi-Tough axles and C.V’s
Hardy Spicer prop shafts
OME suspension (standard height)
The car is a very smooth drive now, power can prove a challenge in the wrong situations, but that’s all part of the fun. It performs off road five fold over the diesel thanks to the extra torque and auto.
Over the year I had time to rebuild the car, I know it seems silly to rebuild a new car but this thing was poorly screwed together. Had rerouted and secured a lot of wiring. If I found a screw, bolt or nut that wasn’t stripped it is because it wasn’t tightened in the first place.
I will post a few pic’s tomorrow and happy to offer what limited help I can to anyone looking at something similar.
Regards, Tristan.

Hello Tristan,
Look forward to more pics, we have spoken on youtube PM's before after i found your video a while back.
Interested to know how you set up the shifters i am at that stage with mine now. Also interested to know how you fit a commodore steering wheel??

Also looking at your engine bay pic, thats one neat job! mine will never look that neat but i am not really building it to look pretty. A few questions tho, did you retain the stock alternator position? are you running A/C? and did you modify the chassis at all?

Hi,
I would love to see some pictures cal415, I might be able to offer some help so i'll pm you my contact details.
I used the std commodore ancillary kit for reliability and access to repair parts, belts and idlers. The alternator is mounted low in the bay which generally makes people ask about water! WD40 and a water bra, I avoid water when I can anyway (door seals)
A/C, std commodore pump (VZ - VE) and brackets, you will need to spring for a Disco sbox to get the clearance though.
If you are in Albury one day pop in for a drive, better yet hurry up and finish yours. The club is running a snow trip in July which i could get you on, nothing like a 6.0l in sand and snow :D

Hi Tristan,
Click the link in my signature it will take you to the build up thread, the LS1 swap doesnt start till a few pages in and the whole thread includes a lot more then just the motor conversion.
Heres a few of the last vids i put up
YouTube - ‪Ls1 county first drive‬‏
YouTube - ‪WOOOOW!!.wmv‬‏
YouTube - ‪Ls1 drive‬‏
I havnt linked this one to my thread yet, but its a drive by up to 3rd gear, gearing is very low.
YouTube - ‪Ls1 county‬‏
I have actually gone with an LS1, my engineer told me the limit for my vehicle was 5800cc so never bothered looking for a l98/l76 etc, i am also building on a pretty low budget so for 1500 this motor was a bargain, it came with everything from the ECU/Loom etc to the full exhaust/clutch etc.
To get some extra poke out of it ive done a few mods and a cam swap, from what i have been told i should expect about 450hp out of it :)

How much easier is a build with no body, I'm sure it made my buddies with Jap 4WD's jealous as they try fitting their LS over front guards. As for the LS1, nothing wrong with the 5.7, especially if you came from a 3.5 (revs are key). I am good friends with a guy who has a stock 5.7 in a GQ shorty. He only has two speeds, stationary and flat out, I think he squeezes out about 800hp just from shear determination :D
I will definitely read your thread this week, will probably have to take a few days off though, it's long!!! I would love to give you the number of my engineer (NSW/Vic) but I found out today he has pulled the pin. There is no problem with a 6.2l in a Defender in Victoria, to bad about NSW. Hard to pass up a well priced LS1 anyway.
When do you think it will be ready for the road? Would love to have a look at it!!!
Regards, Tristan
P.S I have a new LT95 and t-case when you need it ;)
