I just bought a Disco 3 S and am looking at upgrades. I'll be starting with a chip module, then a 50mm lift with air bags in the rear. I've been searching online for an aftermarket exhaust and have come up with nothing. Anyone out there know anything? Surely someone bends exhaust for these and I won't have to get a custom job.

What exactly did you hope to gain from fitting a "Aftermarket " exhaust ? Obviously you have the V6 petrol engine ?

Disco3_BigBoat,
I can not help you.
However I was driving along today looking at the rear of a D3 in front of me and noticing how the twin pipes (TDV6) seem to be the lowest point at the rear of the car and began thinking surely someone must have thought about, planned or already done a mod and found a new route for the exhaust so they either go over the rear axle or exit in front of the rear wheels or something like that.
I assume you are talking bigger pipes for better performance etc but if with your chipped and lifted D3 you were planning to get really serious and an exhaust upgrade was wanted then a change in the rear design would want to be considered.
Will be interested to see what transpires.
If you have no luck here, go on the Disco3UK site as there is probably a greater chance you will find someone on there who can assist.

Alive tuning do a TDV6 system with removable rear section for offroading.

I was told a little while ago that there was alot of work went into the design of the Disco's air intake & exhaust sytem, and there is not much room for improvement.
I'm leaving mine as is.

The D3/4 being such a quiet vehicle, I think any exhaust mod would run the risk of introducing unwelcome noise, such as a drone. IMO it would be prudent to explore this option more thoroughly before laying out any cash.
If it is just a performance gain you are after, I have a feeling the gains will be minimal. We are not talking about a 4.2 Patrol diesel here. GGHAGGIS ran a D3 in competition. If there was anything to be gained, I would guess Gordon has tried it already.

Admiral is right. Gordon would be a good person to get advice from as far as extra performance.
The money that you would have to spend on a custom exhaust, would not be worth the minimal gain. I had an ECU upgrade done on my D3 (and nothing else) and the power / torque gain was very noticible.
Your thoughts Gordon???????????

Most of the comp work I did in the D3 didn't rely on tiny incremental performance increases, which I suspect is all you'd get from a custom exhaust system. Upgrading the intercooler will give you far greater increases (have a look at AliSport in the UK - of course, this only applies to a diesel D3!).
I did chat to one of the guys working on a D3 in Europe (for the Dakar Rally, but they never ended up competing), and they had removed the two rear mufflers (replaced with a straight-through). They claimed a minimal increase (they had also upgraded the intercooler), but had heard of concerns about the back-pressure on the turbo. I don't think you'd get any greater increase with the petrol V6 + exhaust upgrade.
In terms of clearance, one of my clients has replaced the twin pipe design with a single pipe (exiting on the driver's side rear). He still had the pipe routed under the rear diff/driveshaft housing, so didn't really gain much in terms of clearance. With the adjustable suspension it isn't really possible to re-route over the top, but it may be possible in a coiler.
Cheers,
Gordon

I'll be interested to hear about the air bags in the rear. Not sure if that is possible with the coiler as you have the spring with the shock absorber inside it?

Correct you are. I had a friend in the States who was telling me about a hollow bellows that a new shocky threaded through the middle. After a little more reserch on that, this product is still in the R & D stage at this time. His mate is on the project and it looks like it is not going ahead.

Good advice Stig000,
I just had about 400mm length on both pipes on a TDV6 replaced, where they get squashed near the bends around the read diff.
Only cost $200 from the local exhaust place, who used stainless like the original and did a great weld/overlap job on both ends.
Funny thing is that I thought that fixing the pipes would make some noticeable difference since one was squashed to about 1/2 its diameter, but it made no difference in performance or noise.
I have since fitted the LLams which should stop this re-occuring.

Thanks for the info guys. I just assumed an upgraded exhaust would improve performance. It did on my old Navara, but this isn't a Navara! Please excuse my ignorance.
Looks like the bellows are out too. I wanted them so the rear end wouldn't sag while towing my boat. We'll see if the upgraded suspension helps stiffen things up a little.
Any suggestions on suspension?

HP500,
No. not so obvious. It is a TDV6. I had hoped to gain some power but it seems as though I was mistaken. Thanks to everyone here for educating me. I'm am glad of this forum doing so. This is my first Land Rover and may need more education in the future.

Disco3 Bigboat,
For springs try King Springs, check the website and you will find they make various rated and height springs for the coiler D3. Ordered through a popular automotive chain store you will find them at a realy good price in fact super cheap ;) With the right combination you will gain ride quality, height and load carrying capacity at the rear.
Hope this helps. Cheers
