View Full Version : So does anyone in VIC have the plates "TDI-300"?

Young Angus

I just registered my newly acquired Disco 1 Tdi and got my generic plates which were not exciting at all and was wondering if the plates TDI-300 were actually owned by someone with a 300 Tdi engine in their car.

Chances are those plates are probably on a Toyota Corolla somewhere :(

They're on a White 1996 TA Chassis 110 Defender Trayback 16L27647A SALLDHAF7TA971706. This is publically available info off the net.

But seriously, this is something I don't get. Why? Your Disco is a 300Tdi, it's implicit.

I don't understand BMW/Mercs etc that have plates "280SEL" and literally 20 cm away the badge 280SEL that you paid for on the damn boot.

I don't understand either. Another thing that I really, really, don't understand is those same Mercs, with teh same number plates also usually place another badge on the other side if the boot - AMG.

Seriously... When did AMG ever make a C180 Kompressor.

If someone put an HSV badge on their Omega Commodore, they would be stoned to death by the first owner of a real HSV they drove past.

I am with you on that one.

Plenty of C180 AMG's around though.

AMG do not make any car though, they enhance and a simple exhaust, wheels or door sill detail will earn you the tag.

I have a 500SL AMG parked right next to my car daily, only enhancement that received is AMG wheels.

Sorry mate, but that's not true. AMG are certainly a separate entity from Mercedes, just as HSV is separate to Holden. The only real similarity is that you can purchase them at the main dealerships. The SL500 you mention is a Mercedes SL500 with a customer spec AMG badge added. If it was an AMG is would be called an AMG SL55.

There is no AMG C180. There's an AMG C34, C43, C55, C63.

The trend is that all AMG's have a two number model designation. Anything else (such as the SL500) is a fake with an AMG badge added by the driver.
These guys haven't earned the tag in my eyes. They are just wannabes. Mercedes bogans if you like.

Yes, I'm a huge Mercedes fan, purist and know way too much about the marque to accept that a set of wheels or an exhaust makes any Merc an AMG.

Sorry. Been to their workplace in Burgstall and Affelterbach. Also went to Brabus and Kraemer for that matter.

I than worked at Mercedes in Bremen(north of Germany).

AMG stands for Aufrecht,Melcher and Grossaspach. First two are names of founders and last is place of Aufrechts birthplace.

They started on their own than later were part owned by Daimler/Chrysler and are now(as of 2005) fully owned subsidiary of before mentioned DC.

W116,W123, W124, 126, 129 and so on were all AMG'd by some degree be it officially or not. Here in Oz, very few are touched and many more in Europe are touched by a company called Brabus, very serious aftermarket company.

The 500SL came from BEA Mercedes specced as such AMG with no badges but in owners manual as a AMG. The wheels show their suttle badge.

I will post pic later when in office.

Thanks for flying AMG.

why not defer to the Merc=amg website?

Mercedes-AMG: About AMG: History (http://www.mercedes-amg.com/history.html#/amg-history)

slow first screen but it loads eventually!!

in the history section, press "read more" on top of embedded video and it flips so you can read the text of the video... (hold and drag slider to go up and down)

OK, cool... I know all of the above already and agree. Very cool that you worked at Mercedes in Germany too.

When you're talking of the 500SL AMG, are you talking about the 80's and 90's models?

I thought you were talking about one of these... An SL500 with an AMG badge added...

I think you'll see where I was coming from in proclaiming a newer model SL500 to be an AMG just because it has a badge, versus a legitmate old school 500SL AMG.

Double cheers for that.

Their workshop is quite unusual also, many staff have 2-3 generations of people employed, have Health spa resort trips for staff included in their wage packages called KUR and are send to relax in salt water natural spas to places like Bad Harzburg.

Very dynamic team.

Brabus is similar but not with as much history.

Young Ben-- With rego plates, I would save the money and install a under bonnet compressor, long range tank or sill tank or take the wife and dogs on a camping trip.

Thats just my opinion or personalised plates so unless they are rare and appreciate in value.

Spend your money on stuff that makes you $$$ now that you hopefully have a car that will go the distance.;)

That my friend is indeed a nice Merc, but an AMG it most certainly is not. It's just had a set of wheels added to it, which can be purchased from the dealer when new or even at places like Bob Jane e.t.c.!!

Righto... Back to plates. I agree that they can be a waste of money if you're stating the obvious. I had a personailse black and white plate once on my old W108 Mercedes, MM-253 (Mercedes Member number 253), which I think was fine.

But Big Guy is right, so much more you could spend your money on that would actuially better the car than a plate that tells you what model it is.

Original Owners manual as its on 1st owner states CLK500 AMG.
Has certificate from AMG also.

Door sills are AMG logos on them and suspension tuned by them. Not sure what they do, perhaps lower and stiffer etc but there are engineering details from AMG regarding sprung and unsprung wheels etc.

I believe its not a full monty engine like the one they build for the Pagani Zonda but its certainly been tickled and he paid a princely sum for it.

I was tehre when he picked it up. Had a red ribbon around it too plus a drivers day voucher. Oh and of course an umbrella, shoe polish kit and pen and pencil set.

Sully

I think the guy's been had. Seriously.

If it were an AMG, it would be a CLK55 or CLK63, not a CLK500. Sure it might have a few AMG bits on it, but that doesn't make it an AMG. Just as putting a set of HSV shadow chrome wheels on an Omega doesn't make it an HSV.

Sure, it might have some AMG wheels, some Eibach springs and some door sills with AMG stamped on it... But, trust me, this is not an AMG regardless of the certificate that states he's got some AMG pieces on it.

If you can find an AMG CLK500 anywhere in the Mercedes/AMG model history, I sir will eat my hat.

This is the rear end of a real CLK AMG. Very different.

I am referring to a different brand, but I think the same thing goes. My parent's previous car was a BMW 330ci M-sport. It had M logos here and there, suspension was stiffer but it was not a fair dinkum M division car. Audi have the 'S-line' as well that gets a red background badge front and back, but is different from a real S-whatever.

The motor in the Zonda is a 7.3 litre V12, completely different to anything in a CLK.

Yep, same thing goes. My Mum also had an M-Sport 330ci and had an M badge on it somewhere. I used to give her hell about it. She still says she used to have an M3. Haha.

330ci with M badges and tuned suspension = Not M3
M3 = M3

CLK500 with AMG wheels, springs and sill plates = Not CLK55 AMG
CLK55 AMG = CLK55 AMG

Audi A4 S-Line = Not RS4/S4
RS4/S4 = RS4/S4

Yes, the Zonda does have a V12, a hyper version of the 7.0 AMG engine. Crazy stuff. That engine even makes Brabus look like childs play.

Young Angus
21st May 2011, 07:53 AM
Holy crap that Zonda engine sounds ridiculous...I wonder if it would still be more economical than a Rover V8? ;)

Frank I totally agree I would never actually purchase personalized plates, the only time I'd get that number is if it was on a regular VIC plate and it was available so I just had to pay thirty bucks for the plates themselves but I really don't care that much...I'd love to do it if it was cheap but if it was any more than that there are plenty of other things I can spend my "borrowed" money on.

My sister once had personalized plates on her old Kombi which she loved, but unfortunately the car was rubbish and the plates were probably the most valuable part on it.

The only number plate I might pay for is one that read "C1"...but I think that one's already taken...

Sorry mate--Allthough initial formula one help, the donk in the Pagani is the Mercedes M180 V12.
Handbuilt by AMG. Try again.
When I say I have been to AMG, I was not kidding.
Seen a Zonda parked there in fact that had a seized motor.

I am beginning to like you. The motor is the M180. its wicked.

You are 100% correct yet a little wrong as a purist its definately not the full spec clk55 amg.
Its just had a lick over by amg and owner was charged accordingly.

Same goes for some BMW's which carry the M badge.

M3 is an M3, M5, M6 etc are either real or not.
The rest just had a shimmer of accessories installed.
Disappointing but thats marketing.

Same goes for brabus which you rarely see here in OZ but you can spend $5k or $100k and still get a Brabus badge.

A good friend has a crazy 930 Turbo with a full Kraemer motor and suspension and brake kit make over.

Its absolutely track car only really but still road registred.
Has a 4 speed box and dump it in 3rd gear and you know whythey are called widow makers.

I have to admit to owning a personalised plate once, thought it was cool.
HDT 49. Had I known they be worth a fortune I would have never sold teh car and plates. VK Group A Brockie. Hand delivered by the bible bashing christian he became along with a 5 day track experience. Mark Skaife was young than and was his side kick.

however like other members have said if you are still needing equipment for your car then you might be wiser spending the money on acquiring those bits first..

Here in SA, we have historic number plate auctions, some selling well over $100k. They look wicked on say F430, or SLK etc. (no mention of AMG:o)

However, and its because I know you!!!
At the end of the day, who really gives a **** what you have on your plate. Its your car now, your money and your choice--thanks to a democratic country we live in.

Its just that you asked, we answered and sure it went a bit off at a tangent there for a while but so what!!!

I had a good time and its great to flick a few comments Sullys way and him not take offence or be offensive like some on this site.

I just spent a little while riveting the LPG plates to my new plates and that's enough reason for me not to want to change plates again...not that it was hard, I just couldn't be bothered.

I'm just a bit upset no one thought my cruiser/patrol comment was funny :(

Haha SUCCESS OH YEAH IT FEELS SO GOOD!!!!!!!!! I took a few more things off this time and pulled it all further out, then got the spring in there and it finally clicked into place and I did a big victory fist up into the air...and then began wishing I hadve done that ages ago when the car was still mine so I could have enjoyed a working tailgate lock :( Oh well, I sat there for a while opening and closing it in my driveway to make up for it. Felt so good that I finally conquered the tailgate door lock spring that thing has been haunting me for about six months or more.

Haha wow now this thread is off topic even more...but it's okay because I'm the one who started it right ;)

Cheers to you guys and to this forum you all rock!!!

Off topic some more I'm a surveyor and I pulled out my gear yesterday because I wanted to know exactly how high off the ground the highest point of the new disco was for going in car parks etc...the top of the factory roof rails is 1996mm high. It'll
probably jump up to a cool 2.2m once I put the big a$$ roof rack on from my V8 though...bye bye car parks :(

Go to Google and type in "eternal earth bound pets" and have a read, fascinating stuff. Red Symons was talking to the founder on his radio program the other morning.

It's a good thing it didn't happen or that guy would have had a few thousand cats and dogs and birds to take care of...egg on his face if that had happened!
