Stig,
There is only one thing I would think about ( nice big rd trip at the end of the yr or so), It's the wet and going on the last.....your trip may be in danger of non existing. By that I mean the roads and tracks will be closed.

The Diamontina basically covert their roads, and for good reason. So if it rains you will stop, whether you can make it or not the roads will close in all directions. You could understand the costs of repairs in remote areas and this is enforced. So the Simpson may not be an option. The desert is also closed as Ayre Ck etc rise.

To the North, you may not make the Cape as the roads are either closed or impassable. However you may be able to enjoy trying to get as far as you can on open roads/ tracks within reason.

Knowing what to walk or not to is not limited to depth or how fast the water is moving.

Hey a good trip either way and I would try first, but do look for road conditons prior to going.

One thing only, if you become stuck and require assistance, how long can you be self sufficient, until some form of help can arrive? This can take some time/ days.... all OK if you are prepared and OK.

Please do not be put off, just be prepared for turning back, being stuck and isolation. Not trying to be a ney sayer but just wanting awarness.

Regards,
PeterW

I'd suggest that if you're thinking of "end of year" then you'd be better off heading south and maybe visiting the VicHigh country or even a tad further south and take in Tassie.
Wrong time of year to be heading to the northern regions.

Words of wisdom there.

Do your homework big time and email locals at roadhouses etc.

Also, not staying at any parks is a big call as after a few days a proper shower or bed is worth more than you may imagine from you chiropractic ensemble you may be slumbering on tonight.

I was stuck at Mt Isa for 2 weeks, was coming up the birdsville track and than was gonna head west after Mt Isa.

Had a good time but the rain up there is something else if if you get stuck, there is nothing but red mud around and if if you have a tent, where would you pitch it?

I thought you were going overseas at end of this year anyhow or was that last year you went?

Most caravan parks will let you just drop in for a shower for a few bucks.

If you're tenting it and driving a fuel efficient diesel and you've already decided you're going, then I wouldn't be worrying about the cost, I think you should just go and have a bloody good time. :D

Id be calcing on camping in pub grounds and van parks where you can, as that's where the social aspect of traveling comes in, people are alot of what makes the holiday, you could do the Simpson itself with a swag and a fridge, but the rest you need to meet and greet others to enjoy it to it's fullest

From a cost perspective, you can work out some rough costs based on km's fuel cost, and an allowance for accommodation - something like a caravan park every 3 days (or whatever you decide).
Food - you have to eat anyway so if you plan ahead it shouldn't cost you that much more than living at home provided you eat sensibly and don't go too hard on the frothies each night.

I'm assuming that "end of the year" means Nov-Feb sort of thing - not end of financial year.....

If heading down south, accommodation is cheaper/easier to find if you stay out of the peak holiday season (xmas/school hols etc), and even camping in the high country can get a bit busy on long weekends etc.

End of the year you're unlikely to drive in snow anywhere...

Also completely agree with Rovercare - the people you meet while traveling are a large part of the experience. They tell you about all the best places they've been, and set you up with a whole bunch of destinations to choose from for your next trip.

As big guy said about his little holiday, being a Mt Isa-ite myself i can say that around the time you are thinking is a bad idea, we go for 2-3 weeks with nothing being able to get through, the supermarket shelves empty pretty quickly. Maybe if you have room on the roof you could take a dingy.:p
In regards to your actual question, it costs me about $500 in fuel to do the Mt Isa - Brisbane trip, about 2200km, everything on top of that is just supplies, water, food, accommodation if you get sick of the swag. The major cost i noticed was initially making sure the car is up to the task.

When we did Cape york about 11 years ago (bugger time flies ) it cost us about $8000. So long as you dont take my Wife with you, you might get away with doing it for $4-5000.:D

Define end of the year? October November can be a great time on the Cape... heaps less tourists and you get the possibility of calmer weather on the east coast. Roads generally wont close till end of November. Its one of my favourite times to head north!

Work out your kays, call fuel at $2 a litre and you ll have some beer money in the fuel budget. Just go and enjoy yourselves!

thats the plan, have a mad time and see the great contry we have, maby nov-dec time, were still in the (making our minds up what to do) stage so open to eny idears realy,

were expecting fuel at 2$ and a at worst 2.50 for a full refuel once or twice, but all our cars have LR tanks so wev got a lil bit of leway there i guess,

Hey Brettsky64,

Did the Simpson last July 2010 via Inaminca, Birdsville -east to west. Then over to over Ayres Rock and back to NSW via Mt Isa.

Travelled 8983km, used 1121.8ltr, cost $1762.00, spent an additional $5k. (didn't skimp out any at all along the way) It was just the Missus and I. Away 6 weeks

Left 4 July 2010, All the advice said don't go, very wet you won't get through - went any way.

Didn't find to many problems - Go For it, don’t be put off !!!

Did Cape York the year before (2009) in a D3 towing a camper trailer, travelled 8,789Km, used 120.8ltr, cost $1695. Spent an extra $6K Missus + 2 kids. (Cape York is not the untamed wilderness, getting very commercial and expensive) – Away 5 weeks.

You could do it heaps cheaper if you wanted to, but we didn't skimp out, Ate out - drank lots.....

Hope some actual figures helps in your planning.

If you want to go - then go - don't be put off....

Did a three month trip a few years ago - Sydney, Alice, Darwin, Kimberley, West Coast, SW WA, Eyre Peninsula, Flinders, Sydney. With two of us in the Disco with Camper, cost - excluding preparation and fuel - was $8.60 each per day.
