Hey Folks,

I'm about to head over to Mum's in order to attempt to remove the steering column on my 1959 Series II (Molly). It's all part of the work to replace the bulkhead.

Any tips? I had a look last week and skimmed through the Haynes manual but there didn't seem an easy way to do it....

If you've got the early model column, which matches the wire spoke steering wheel, remember to remove the bolt holding the steering completely, not just loosen the bolt.

Other than that, a heap of degreaser, a pressure washer, and an angle grinder with a 1mm cutting disk are your best friends.

The steering wheel is usually the biggest problem, the rest is just time and a few bolts.

In the engine bay you leave the tie rod end on the lever and remove the lever from the box at the splined end, then remove the bolts between the box and the support bracket. It can be done without removing the mudguard, but you have to take the splash guard inside the mudguard off.

As Peter says, make sure you remove the bolt from the steering wheel. If it won't pull up and off the shaft with bare hands, I have had success using several truck size CV removal tools. One is inserted from each side with tapers together and hitting the ends of the tool with a hammer. This option is out if your vehicle has the drum for the turn indicators and horn button contact.
