Today I have a fantasy and thought something happened, unfortunately there are no piccys so by :rulez: it didn't happen.

Our club was working on the tank shed today, amongst other things the plan was to tow a WWII Stuart tank out of the shed, degrease and paint the engine bay in preparation for the return of it's just overhauled radial engine. The tow vehicle was to be the WWII half-track, unfortunately it wouldn't start - such are the idiosyncrasies of 70 year old trucks.

Our only fall-back was to use my 4.6 RRc :o So, using the technique of the draught horses shunting railway carriages and trams, Vague was connected up, low range selected, then merely took up the slack, let it rev just above idle at around 1200-1500 RPM on the torque converter and out the tank rolled! :D

We then used an ACCO A frame to reverse the process! A little more difficult this time, because the it was now on gravel and wet from the degreasing. However there was only a little wheel spin once.

Don't think I'd like to do it over much distance or with a hill involved, or with a manual box model.

Images next time.

Before I feel impressed MR Pedantic requires a little more information please.
How heavy is a Stuart tank minus engine?
What is the rolling resistance in pounds per ton weight of a tank with tracks in good condition?
For example, a 40 ton wheeled trailer with a rolling resistance on level hard surface of 90lbs per ton can be pulled by a series 2 landy.exerting a drawbar pull of 3600lb.

best guess for weights sans engines bout 11T, less if the armoured covers were off as well.

best guess for rolling resistance about 10-15% of the mass since its tracked (this assumes no additional resistance from the transmissions and all of the running gear is A1)

so youd need perhaps 2T to overcome the moment of inertia and then probably half that to keep it moving on the flat.

(thats all best guess)

All the armour was present but no ammunition or fuel. The Continental R-670 air cooled radial engine has a dry weight of 211 Kg, so assuming a wet weight of 250Kg (14,700 - 250) Vague pulled/pushed something in the order of 14,450Kg of M3 Stuart Tank but I'll still be happy if you call it 14 Tonne.

As to the other questions, the tracks are in worn condition and the tank hasn't moved for 18 months so everything on the 70 year old beast was tight, as I could feel every link as it came around the drive gear.

Now I'm quite impressed:)Keep us updated on any halfshaft failures over the next couple of weeks though won't you?;)
