We've owned the disco now for 2 years. We've done around 33,000km. On/offroad, bush/beach, dunes, mud ... we've towed, done recoveries, driven through snow, taken it camping, won 1st place best in class at Castle Hill last year, used it as a tractor at the BIL dairy farm, done a little touring, it's even taken us to Queensland and back 4x times without incident. Just jump in it, turn the key & go, without a care or worry in the world.
I've serviced it every 10,000k. It gets washed and cleaned when it's dirty. It doesn't leak oil. It's so comfortable to drive distances in. We never panic about the price of fuel because it's pretty frugal for a 2T truck (11.95km/L over the last 33,000kms).
I've had 2x failures. Radiator top hose bleed screw, and power steering reservior to pump hose rubbed through on the block. Both found in the driveway at home, so we never got stranded somewhere far from home, was able to do a quick temp' repair with both and parts got delivered a couple of days later and we were back on the road. We did end up with a leaking airspring, but a loaner from an AULRO member kept us going till the new ones came from the UK, so it wasn't a show stopper failure, and it didn't immobilise the vehicle as it was still driveable with the leaking spring ... sigh :(
I'm becoming very dissolussioned with my Discovery. :(
It doesn't have a leaking fuel cooler, or diesel in the sump, or faulty injectors, or a cracked head, or leaking hubs, or a failed turbo, or blown transmission cooler hoses. The cooling system isn't faulty/failing, the dashboard doesn't gurgle. There's never any faults to read with my Nanocom (what a waste of money that was! :( ), all the electrics work, the fuel pump is going strong, there's no leaking fuel lines, the exhaust manifold isn't warped and whistling, there's no broken exhaust manifold studs, the air suspension works correctly, the compressors not carked it. There's no oil in the injector harness or engine loom. It doesn't have any annoying vibrations, The tailshafts aren't failing. Nothing. Nada. Zip !
I think I bought a lemon! ;)
I'm kinda jealous as instead of spending my weekends, evenings and free time being a part time vehicle technician & mechanic, all I can do is look at my disco and hope that one day, maybe I too can actually get my hands dirty and tackle the real issues that keep us all Land Rover owners (other than routine servicing & adding accessories ... how boring!) .... alas, my disco has let me down and is not letting me join in the fun & angst that a normal Land Rover Discovery 2 owner gets to enjoy.
Maybe I should sell it and trade down to a Toyota, or Nissan, or I even almost considered going back to a Series III, but I already owned 2 of those and THEY never ever let me down either, and they were regularly driven like they were stolen (esp' offroad).
All in all Land Rover, you have failed to meet my expectations ... I get told constantly by owners of other marques how brave I must be to own a Land Rover Discovery Td5 and all I can do is lie awake at night dreaming of what might/could have been .... sigh :(

Anyone have an old Lada Niva they want to part with ?

I hate you
; )
I can assist you with your issue by driving down and swapping mine with yours. It only has small niggles, but enough to keep your hands dirty occasionally.
Cheers, Dave

Good to hear your Disco is so reliable Fluids, there are always lots of storys about how unreliable Landys are but few about how good they can be.
My brother always laughs at me for owning Landy's as he reckons they are unreliable heaps of gas guzzling poo.
That was until two weeks ago when his suposedly super reliable Subaru Liberty blew a head gasket on the freeway coming down here and he kept driving it and melted the engine.
So I had to loan him the good old trusty D1 Mountain Goat to get home to Sydney, now I can't get it back from him. He keeps making feeble excuses for not bringing it back even though it is costing him heaps in fuel.
So if anyone sees a lifted silver D1 with flared guards on 33's driving around the northern beaches with a 50 something year old bloke driving it around could you ask him to bring it back please.
PS ...Not sure why you feel the need to flash you arse to the neighbours dog though ...must be a Animal Bay thing :wasntme:

Nice work Fluids ... good to hear some positive about the D2.
That's the unfortunate thing about these forum sites ... mostly it'd guys wanting advice on how to repair something ... if I was thinking about buying a D2 and saw this website, I'd be wondering if there were any on the road at all!
I too have had my D2 for about 30000kms ... it's the family vehicle, does plenty of towing, on and off -road, drops the kids to school, shopping etc ... never missed a beat with the only exception of a slowly dying battery and factory shocks finally dying after 90000kms.
Cheers

You are the bravest man I know, [ never heard of Murphy's law? ] My D2 has 336,000 km's on the clock, and going strong! I'm trying for 500,000, thats my goal, hoping to celebrate with a trip to Broome, I think the Disco will outlast me. Bob :D

I couldn't help myself ... :D There are goods ones (to any newbies wondering if they should/shouldn't buy a Td5 D2a). I read the forum for 3-4 months before purchasing and when purchase time came I was a) well informed on what to look for, and b) ****ting myself that it was all gonna go pear shaped from what I'd read on the forum
... I got a good one :)
Yep, the family vehicle that does "everything/anything".

Actually we only moved down to Goulburn just over 2 years ago for work.
We still own the family home in Nelson Bay so we know how good it is to live in that part of the world, and we know all about the tourists /terrorists ;) and how the supermarkets / shops put up their prices over christmas because of the many visitors.
Will be up there next weekend for a birthday party at our neighbours, so while we live here we still go back reasonably often.
cheers,
Terry

well since you are having so much trouble with your d2 I think I can assist you with a great range of repairs to be sorted ! It seems that both the recenntltly rebuilt engine and gearbox will need more work , and therefore another bucket of cash. .i nearlrly weep with joy reading about the flawless running of your machine. Hope the luck doesnt run out.

Fluids, I'm with you all the way. We've had our D2 since 22K miles we'll hit the century before Xmas. We've had clutch master cylinder fail, fuel pressure regulator leak, power steering pipe rub through and one balljoint go. Only the clutch master kept us off the road and then only overnight. Daisy is a bit of a tarmac queen but hauling 4 kids and a trailer over the Pyrenees at motorway speeds to Barcelona in the summer was no challenge at all. She is so good that we're hoping to bring her to Austalia with us later this year!
.....that's fate well and truly tempted.....
