Hi,

Can someone let me know please, what the style/type name of the five spoke 16 x 7 alloys are that the base level Disco IIs came out with?

Hi Piriaka,

As far as I know... and I don't know much.

There were two base model alloy patterns. The early D2s had the flat spoke and the later ones changed to an indented spoke.

If you flick through the Show us your D2 thread, you will see them both. On the first page, Hendrik has the former, Redback the latter.

The early, flat spoke wheels are called "Tempest" not sure what the later ones are called.

According to James Taylors Ultimate Buyers' Guide the indented spoke wheels on the '03-04 D2's were called "Style 1". The Tempest style was available on 1999-2002 MY D2s.

Edit: The 2001 Discovery Accessories catalog has the indented style shown on Redback's D2 listed as "Polar". According to Taylor this style was available on 2001 and 2002 MY D2s.

Was there also 16 x 8" wheels factory fitted? Which models had them from standard?

I thought only the US 4.6 litre D2s had them but I'm often wrong (don't tell my wife that!)

The Disco II Classics were fitted with a wider, lower profile tyre but I'm not sure if they also went to a wider (8") rim.

I have a 2004 catalog that shows rim style 3 ? as being standard on the Discovery. It's called Alloy Wheel Style 1, 7x16.
The model S had rim style 13, called Alloy Wheel Style 2, 7x16
Model SE had rim style 6, called Alloy Wheel Style 3, 8x16. this wheel was also standard on the 2004 Discovery Classic Country.
The HSE had rim style 16, called Alloy Wheel Stlye 6, 8x18
The Discovery Classic Town had rim style 15, called Alloy Wheel Style 5 8x18.
There was also an optional rim style 17, called Alloy Wheel Style 7, 8x18

In March 2000 the Australian Land Rover website listed the following wheel fitments for the Discovery:

Wheels/ Tyres
Standard - Five 16" x 7J alloy wheels/ 235 section tyres
7 Seat Package - Five 16" x 7J alloy wheels/ 235 section tyres
ES - Five 16" x 8J alloy wheels/ 255 section tyres
Option - Five 18" x 8J alloy wheels/ 255 section tyres

The 18" wheel options were ProLine/ProSport (99-02MY), Mondial (00-01MY) and Triple Sport (99-02MY).

In mid-2002 the 16" Lighting (x8") and Polar (x7") styles were listed as an options.

These are the rims on mine - they are 16 x 8.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/190/dscf1300w.jpg/)

Mine is a 2002 base model 5 seater. I don't know if the wheels were on from new, as I'm the second owner of the vehicle. It was originally purchased in Adelaide, and I bought it in Kalgoorlie. The original owner had spent a bit of money on after-market roof railings & cross-bars, plus some bar-work that looked nice but not good for much other than shopping centre bumps (since replaced & sold), so he may also have decided to change the wheels. The vehicle had very low k's on it when I bought it though, and was running what appeared to be original Landrover supplied Michelins. When I fitted the GT Radials, I had to turn the wheel carrier over as I couldn't close the rear door with the larger profile tyre fitted.

A few people have asked me where I got the wheels, and seemed surprised when I told them that the vehicle had them on when I bought it. But I have seen the same rims on other D2's, and I have seen the same rim for sale on e-bay.

Same stud pattern, tapered wheel nuts used, offset and center hole?

Hey guys,

I'm considering some 16x8 wheels for my Disco but I don't want to spend a fortune. It will probably cost me enough in freight up here in Darwin.

I currently have a set (5) of 18x8 Pro-Sport / Pro-Line wheels in the back shed with extremely bald tyres and a set of these "Adventurers" with 245-75/16 BFG KM2 tyres.

From previous experience I know going an extra bit wider in rim size can really open out a tyre and make it appear wider. That's one reason I want to go wider, the other is I'd like to go 265-75/16 tyres next time and a narrow rim with a wide tyre can sort of float where a rim the matches a tyre a bit closer, stands the side walls up and makes it track a bit better. IMO.

Now I know this thread is not about whether wide tyres are better or worse but about rim styles and sizes on the D2. So I'm thinking I can buy a set of 16x8 rims and off load the 10 rims I currently have to cover most if not all of the cost.

In a previous post by "Off Track" he show "Style 3" rims are 16x7 but I have found them listed here 2003-2004 Land Rover DiscoveryII "Style 3" Flat 6 Spoke chrome plated wheel. Hollander number: 72179 (http://www.calchrome.com/wheel_info.php?ccwpn=ROV03STYLE316X7C&x=2&type=exch) and other places as being 16x8. I dont like the RR style wheels or the Mirage style. I haven't been able to confirm what the Stratos look like.

So I'm asking what are the options availible for 16x8 factory rims and what do they look like?

Or maybe I should keep the 18x8 and put some off road tyres on them when the time comes but then I think I'm just going too big for my preferance.

Happy Days.

I just found this:

Buy Discovery 2->Wheels & Tyres->Road Wheels : (http://shop.terrainvehicles.co.uk/Terrain/catalogue.asp?Category=Discovery+2-%3EWheels+%26+Tyres-%3ERoad+Wheels)

Which shows most of the styles with diameters but not widths.

As fare as I can tell (google) The "Lightning" style of wheel is the only other wheel in 16x8?

Happy Days

Thanks "Scouse" but I just dont like the design. Well I didn't until I saw one in Chrome:

Land Rover Discovery II 4 6 s SE HSE 16 inch Chrome Wheels Rims Range 4 0SE 4 0 | eBay

But then I dont think it would suit my Disco.

Currently I'm pretty keen on the Lightning rims so I'm looking for 5.

I just need to find 5 and in Australia.
