Any ideas on this one? I was doing a quick trip to Sydney and back on the weekend when after about 1600ks of travelling the brake light on the dash came on. I was the only one on the road at the time (2am) so wasn't too worried and checked the brake pedal too make sure I had brakes. They seemed alright, had plenty of pressure. The light flickered on and off over the next 50 k's or so and then went out. I have checked the fluid level and it is fine and the light hasn't come back on. I didn't hit anything on the road or drive into a pothole at the time so I don't think anything may have jarred or jolted a wire or connection loose, so this has just got me confused as to why the light would come on. Any help would be appreciated.

Could be a loose/dirty connector on the fluid level sensor.
Could be an earthing issue.
Could be your pads wearing a bit thin.

yes...

Check wiring connections.

but....

Most likely IME is the pads wearing & consequent reduction of master cylinder fluid level will allow the warning to function - but usually only initially on steepish hills.

Otherwise do the usual visual checks for leaks/weeps at calipers and pipe connections.

thanks, will check these issues, but it happened on a flat stretch of road and there are no visual leaks that I can see

As suggested it is most likely due to the brake fluid level. The light came on in my Defender and I noticed the master cylinder was leaking so after a replacement the problem went away... for a short while that is. A few weeks later it came back on however this time it was intermittent. I put it in for a service and was advised that the pads were low and needed replacing so after that was done it went off again... for now.

disconnect the wire at the fluid level sensor and the handbrake light should disappear.
