So why do you need digital for ABC radio? :D

I listen to none of those so I don't need a radio. We don't even have a radio in the house. Breakfast and drivetime radio in Sydney is so bad that I can't bear to listen to it. You know if a radio programme has more than one announcer it is going to be bad.

Then there is sport - another reason to turn a radio off. :D

We don't all share your view on radio. There are a lot of radio stations out there. One of them might not be too bad for you.
For myself I spend anything from 7-12 hours a day on the road. Radio keeps me sane and informed on what's going on. I would love to have digital radio in the ute. I listen to the ABC and would like to be able to switch between normal programming and the cricket as I want. Also it seems every time something interesting comes on I'll hit a tunnel or power lines and miss what was said.

here's one. Pricey though. may be best to wait a while.

You Can Now Finally Get A DAB+ Integrated Car Radio In Australia | Gizmodo Australia (http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/02/you-can-now-finally-get-a-dab-integrated-car-radio-in-australia/)

I too listen to radio pretty much all/every day. ABC has so much that's good to hear. I also record podcasts from places like CBC Canada, BBC, D.W. Germany, and also Radio NZ. Any of these I can listen to in the truck. Talking books are good too.
My current headset has Am, Fm, and Sw. Good for remote areas. I listened to ABC Darwin on Short wave at Farina in SA last July when out there.
I'm keen to hear what you end up doing and how it tuns out.
Don.

Excellent work Don.

Hit the nail right on the head:)

Exactly the information I was looking for.

I wouldn't consider $ 299 expensive for what it is.

I have a 10% discopunt voucher for A'Bahn but the Repco one at $ 299 approx incl a free stick on antennae seems just as good.

I will check them out.

IMHO the brand units trade on their name without necessarily offering quality.

Ron

Nah, I avoid them. I don't want anyone thinking I'm a nice guy.

I had a look at the DBA website and there's a possibility I might find something worth listening to on digital radio. Do like the silence of no radio at all (which is why I don't use a radio at home) and I can't abide talkback.

Looking at the coverage (at the moment) I guess it's going to be not a great advantage for anyone expecting to use it outside the capital cities.

If anything, I want a head unit that can control my iPod. I only listen to music in the car - almost never at home.

I recall the moment that ruined radio for me. Was about 199X, just left Oodnadatta and the tape/cd packed up and couldn't get anything but ABC, and it's davis cup season. Ever listened to tennis on the radio. I was pleading for my eyes to start bleeding so I'd have an excuse to stoop and get out of the car.

Ron - " Nah, I avoid them. I don't want anyone thinking I'm a nice guy"

No chance of that Ron ;)

So what you're saying though is that a better option for those of us that listen to the radio during country/remote travel is an AM/FM/DAB Radio with a good DX ( Long distance?)function and possibly a signal amplifier on the antennae?
( can you buy such an amplifier thingy?)

For super remote travel the HF with AM/FM function?

The iPod input would be a given I'd have thought.

Then again what about the new fangled Bluetooth connection to read/play music off your iPad!!!

iPods for amateurs, how about a sat phone making a wifi connection live streaming your media collection directly from home. Far less tedious than all that mucking around with cables. Come on guys it's not the 00's any more.

I noticed Phillips had a DAB replacement radio when I was in Autobahn the other day. I listen to the radio all day, in the car and at work when I can. I work by myself. JJJ is good. Not commercial, have sensible comentators, even if they are probably 25-30 years youger than me and the music is modern and interesting.

Leave our Ronnie Alone

Exactly how many digital stations are there on the east coast - Canberra, Syd and what type of music do they have.

Will it die out like stereo AM did quite a few years back

G'day Pete,
Yes I have been looking for one too. The AM radio in my Defender is crap.
I prefer to listen to AM (ABC, SEN etc), most radios now are more aimed at the music listenener.

I read a review on a digital car radio last week. (I'll see if I can find it.) They seem to be in the $300 range. The reviewer said it worked well under the tram tracks (a notoriously bad spot for AM). Like you, I would like to hear from someone who has one.

Kenwood also have a DAB radio. I saw it in Autobahn today as well as the Phillips one. less than $400 from memory.

Only problem...

DAB has about as much coverage as a postage stamp and the bit rate is lower than even the lowest on anyones iPod :o
