View Full Version : 08 Sport Turbo problem

Hi all,
hopefully this is not a repeat... I have an 08 TDV8 RR Sport. About 4 months ago, I blew a turbo hose, and LRA replaced both under warranty. 10 days after the 3 year warranty expired, I experienced an engine failure light and "engine system fault" message from the management system. The dealer informed me that one of the turbos is cactused and will cost about 8K to replace. LRA initially refused to fix it under warranty, despite the service agent telling me it was a "known problem". After complaining to LRA, I have now been told they will cover 50% of the parts and labour. I have to say, that with 60000km on the clock, I think this is pretty poor.
Does anyone have similar experience or advice on challenging this decision? I would have thought the statutory warranty should force them to pay...
appreciate any insights or advice.
cheers,
Paul.

Surely they should have picked that up at the last service ? I'd want to see a copy of the service report incase they have marked that as passed or similar ?

At only 60k kms, and 10 days out of warranty, I would be asking LRA for thier offer in writing.

Once you have it, go to your state Consumer Affairs department, and take it up with them.

Any product must be fit for purpose, and it is not a reasonable expectation that a turbo would fail 10 days out of warranty. If you had 100k kms, and 12 out of warranty, you might have a problem, but as it stands, LRA should come to the party.

Thanks Loanrangie...that's a good point...I will check that - it was only serviced about a month before. They are telling me about 8K to fix, but I priced replacement turbos today and they are Left hand 2500 and for right hand 3100 - genuine imports, and I am told through someone at work that it should be about 4-8 hours work - so at 140 per hour and say 8 hours - we should only be looking at about $4200 plus maybe an oil change and filters, so max $5000....
methinks perhaps a rip-off in the making... I am planning to ask for a fully itemised fixed price quote so I can compare and then negotiate....
appreciate the feedback,
cheers,
Paul.

Paul, blown turbo hose could cause turbo to overspeed due to pressure loss. Would probably cook the bearings, worst case impeler destuction. I would be making the case that the blown hose caused the problem and should have been checked when hoses were replaced.

The really scary bit is that ours is out of warranty by 2 weeks.

Cheers Greg

thanks Greg - that was my thought about the hose - LRA's initial refusal was because I chose not to accept the extended warranty that was offered....

When you guys speak of "body off" what exactly do you mean by that? Can someone please explain? Thanks.

Body gets seperated from the chassis.....

Apparently not as bad as it sounds..

Cheers,

Kev.

According to the LR main dealer who maintains my car, changing the turbo/s on a TDV8 Sport is indeed a body off job, there simply isn't the space in the engine bay to do it any other way. They have the job down to 8 hours to lift / refit the body and are doing quite a few this way.

The dealer principal said LR Warranty here in the UK authorise them to replace both turbos if one fails given the work involved to swap them, it's simply not cost effective to only replace the blown one as the other is likely not far behind. I can see the logic behind this but it's a ridiculous scenario really.

They did quote one case of a TDV8 with a blown manifold gasket, body came off to change the gaskets and was given back to the customer. 3 weeks later a turbo failed, so the body had to come off again, customer wasn't best pleased.

If the OP hasn't already looked, there's plenty of info on www.rrsport.co.uk (http://www.rrsport.co.uk) about turbo changes on TDV8's, it's pretty well documented.

WOW!! That is unbelievable...........

Many thanks guys for clearing that up for me. I was envisaging "body off" to mean the front and both mudguard panels along with the bonnet. I never dreamed you meant the whole car.

And to think I harboured ambitions of buying a second hand Range Rover Sport - about the best looking car ever made in my opinion - especially in white. That dream just turned to a nightmare.

If you can afford a Sport, then a 2 post hoist ain't much extra :).

There'll be one going in my shed (hoist that is, not a Sport).

I wouldn't let it put you off, over time as these cars get older I'm sure the independants will suss out cheaper ways of fixing them. To be fair it probably sounds worse than it is, given the nature of the internet you only usually hear of the horror stories. If I'd believed everything I read on the internet about the RRS I'd never have bought one.

I agree Grumbles----great looking vehicle and one of the best I have driven - despite the current issues!

So Paul,

Any joy from LRA on the turbo issue?

thought you may like to know that LRA have come to the party with 100% of the parts, and the dealer is offering 50% of labour. I am not happy with this yet, but we are still talking....so I live in hope.
I wrote to the MD of LRA and the response was within a week, so customer service is still alive an well. I do thank them for the rapid response.
cheers,
Paul.
(bit tired of driving an underpowered RR Sport!)
