Hi,
I recently bought a trailer from a guy in Northern NSW.
It was a cash deal ( transfer actually).
I have tried to register the trailer only to be told that he was not the registered owner.
The trailer was advertised as not registered wit no registration plates but Queensland Transport insist the trailer is registered (and still is until Feb 2012).
They are unable to give me the details of the registered owner nor the registration details of the trailer.
Has anyone got any ways of tracking the details of the registered owner, or the details of the registration?
Also, any ideas on what i can do, if i am unable to track down the registered owner or the details.
TIA
Shaun

Thanks for the information.
I will certainly do that.
Scary thing is i bought it off EBay, and just checked, the seller has a number of items for sale.
Surely there should be some sort of comeback that is available on EBay.
I also paid through PayPal, so should be able to reverse it from that.
Thanks

Shaun, ring eBay and tell them that you suspect the seller is selling stolen goods, get your info from the cops to back up your complaint, if you paid through PayPal you may be in for a refund, Regards Frank.

The seller promptly called me and gave me the details of the guy that he bought the trailer off.
I have been in contact with that seller too now, and waiting for more information.
My patience is starting to run thin on this one now.
They all have until COB Monday to have it resolved, and if not, then i will be visiting the Cop Shop to take further.
Thanks for the concern.

An update.
So got to the point where the contact details to the previous owner ended up being a waste of time. Neither the guy i bought it from, nor the previous owner was able to shed light on the origins of the trailer, but both had receipts of purchase.
Fortunately, i had a mate that did some work on the trailer, and he had a mate that was a trailer builder, so the trailer was registered as a new trailer, and all is now good.
Really upset me how people can be so careless when it comes to transfer of registration from seller to buyer.
a less to all of us..

Sorry to come in late, I recently built a trailer, to get it registered I had to apply to Qld Transport for a VIN No., and had to engrave that No., along with makers name [ this case homemade, ], and tare, etc on a compliance plate, which had to be attached to the trailer. The VIN No. is the ID, if you dont have a compliance plate, sounds a bit suss to me. This seems to be a problem that crops up quite often in Queensland. Before the introduction of VIN plates trailers were issued with manufacturers' identification numbers or no numbers. As a manufacturer could attach any number they wanted to a trailer, often numbers were duplicated by different manufacturers.
I knew someone who went to rego a tandem boat trailer, to be told it was already registered........as a tri-axle Haulmark semi-trailer.
So this trailer probabley has not been stolen, or rebirthed, and is 100% kosher.

Get a refund from PPal, buy an angle grinder and welder, give it a new number. Drink profit, you can't help Qld tspt if they won't help you. And if someones missing a trailer and hasn't noticed by now they have bigger issues.

I'd say get a full refund from PayPal. The person who you bought it off obviously doesn't want the issue solved as soon as possible. Don't waste your time. Get a refund and I believe you may still be able to keep the trailer? Im not sure if this is correct though. Best of luck:)

This is all that's happened here, I bet you.
I worked for QT and have seen this 100 times.
There are heaps of trailers (pre-vin), of all descriptions with the same chassis / ID numbers.
You bought an unregistered trailer in NSW.
QT has a trailer registered here with the same chassis number, that's all.
If it was stolen it would show on QPS and QT systems, which it didn't.
You were able to register the trailer.
You paid for goods as described, were given a receipt, and received them.
Now you want a refund from paypal and to keep the goods? :no2:

It's also known as having your cake and eating it.
Can you just register it in NSW as an unreg using the receipt you got?
I purchased a record (that's vinyl for the youngsters) on ebay, set me back just on $500-, PPal payment bounced back. Called, no response, emailed PPal who didn't want to know. They were happy I received goods. Had someone visit the (interstate) address it was sent from, no one there by the name. What can you do.
