View Full Version : Good Insurance Provider for Defender

G'day all!

First post here, picking up our first Defender tomorrow evening, and looking to line up insurance beforehand.

The vehicle is a 2002 110, but with some substantial mods already aboard (lift kit, suspension, fuel tank, winch, roof rack, bullbar, snorkel, dual batteries, etc).

The vehicle will be primarily used for off-roading, not as a daily drive, so insurance would have to cover off-road. A quick search of the forum seems to indicate TCIS 4WD Insurance as a preferred option.

Popular opinion seems to indicate you can cover a lot of the value of modifications as well with TCIS, as long as they're legal. The Defender has certificates for the mods done to it, so should hopefully qualify.

Looking for any advice from those who have had experience with them, or favourable alternatives that would meet my criteria.

Thanks in advance, and looking forward to getting to know you all!
Cheers!
Michael

Both of mine are/were with GIO (cancelled the 2a due to still not being registered :(), they do cover everything off road both public and private property unless I am there illegally, or competing.
The 2" lift, bigger tyres etc is all written on the insurance. It is the onus of owner not the insurer to make sure modifications are legal and get them engineered if required. If there are illegal mods and they are part of the reason for a claim, they won't want to cover you.

Last time I tried to get quotes from the mob that advertises as Australian 4WD Insurance, aka TCIS, when they didn't know what a Series 2a Land Rover was and asked me to send photos, I gave up on them.

I asked 4WD/ Aus Insurance for a quote today.
They would only do the book value of the vehicle.
Apparently their policy has no facility for agreed value.
As the market value of a Defender is normally far greater than the book value, this excludes them from insuring me...
So if you go with them, check the value the vehicle is actually insured for.

Yours,

Andy

Give Ryno a call, I assume they would do deefers, they do modified rangies. Just clarify off road, they basically said to me if your legally aloud to be there in your car then your covered no matter where you are.

I don't rate TCIS on value, policy, inclusions or service.

Check Shannon's out - you'll probably be very suprised, they have a good policy, off-road friendly, and cover for a lot of your mods/inclusions/goodies that you carry in the vehicle.

I'm always amazed at the variation in quotes from the different insurance companies. I have my d2 insured with nrma and NO other insurance coy, including the one I'd been with for 30yrs, could get within a bulls roar of the nrma premium. nrma was several hundred dollars cheaper than shannons.

I went with Shannons - the only company that would cover me for the agreed value of my low kms 94 Defender 130. Price was less than most others were offering for market value.

With APIA I have my 1994 Defe agree value insured for $16500

Yep I;ve just changed from Suncorp to Shannons.

Suncorp told me a 1995 Defender 130 was worth only "red book" value and they they wouldn;t pay any mpore than that. That value is currently $11,500 which is obviously well below what it would actually cost to replace especially with acessories.

Shannons are covering me for an agreed value of $18,000 ... and for $7 LESS a month than SUncorp.

Well worth a look.

I was also told about DGA Insurance brokers.. apparently they'll cover you for $50K on a 1994 Defender as long as thats the replacement value of teh car and accesories.. but of course the premiums would reflect that. I gave up on them becuase the first time I rang ALL their brokers were in a meeting, the second time they said they'd ring m back.. and they never did.

Funny that considering that suncorp own Shannons
I went with Shannons as most won't insure an import

But I have never gone too cheap on insurance as they can be a pain to claim with

Just had a windscreen claim with Shannons. O'Briens put in some crappy Chinese thing called XYG with more waves than the Pacific Ocean. Complained to Shannons who are now paying for O'Briens to import and fit OE windscreen from UK. I would have to say I am happy with that.

AAI (AUstralian Allianc Insurance) writes policies under their own name and also their other brands APIA, Insure my Ride and Shannons.
There's no reference to Suncorp on the AAI website.

The Suncorp site says
The Suncorp group of companies includes Australia’s largest general insurance group in terms of gross written premium. The key to Suncorp Insurance’s success in general insurance is its portfolio of leading personal and commercial insurance brands.
AAMI, GIO, Suncorp, Vero, Apia and Shannons are some of the brands in the Suncorp Group that have built reputations for insurance innovation and customer service.
Our brands sell their products direct or through intermediaries such as brokers.
interestingly no mention of AAI.

Curious.

Sorry but I don't see your point

All I was saying is that Shannons Is owned by suncorp as proved in the quote you made

i found just cars ok
tcis were a waste of space for three years running i tried to get aquote for 90 but they would onky recognise a 110
shannons were not interested as i drove a 4x4, still can not understand how so many of you have got insurance with them when they were so adament with me that they would not insure a 4x4.
nrma have been fine for 110 but were not interested in 90

I find that really strange. Wife's 90 is insured by Shannons as they were one of the few who will insure an imported vehicle (like Ali Read's). Good thing is they let you pay by the month with no extra charge.

muddymech you sure it was Shannons you were speaking to ?

Maybe you live in a super dodgy postcode ?

Hi all

Just a word of warning for those who are insured with Shannons. We have had our 1994 200tdi defender insured with Shannons for over a year now. One of the main reasons we went with them was that they would insure us for an agreed value of $17 000 and not just the red book value. We received our renewal notice yesterday and found that they had reduced the agreed value by $880.00. We rang them (a bit ****ed off!) and they said the agreed value is only for 12 months (as per the PDS) and that it is subject to an annual decrease. Now i know it is only a few hundred dollars, but another 200tdi in the same condition would be hard to come by. After some lively discussion over the phone and threatening to take my business elsewhere, they agreed to put the value back at $17 000 for another 12 months.

It pays to read the paperwork.

Cheers

Martin

Pretty sure most insurance companies do that, GIO did to mine anyway. I just told them that i'd added some modifications that increased the value by the required amount.

I found the opposite, NRMA were about $300 more than GIO for my Defender, but for the D2 Youi are by far the cheapest, even with multi policy discounts, home, greenslip etc. My greenslips vary so much year to year, that I seem to change companies each renewal, the two Rovers and my bikes.

I dealt with Shannons years ago, when I had an old bike and wifey had an Ek Holden, but when I priced a comp policy for the 71 2A wagon it was well above the others, it wasn't old enough at the time to fall into the market they were chasing.
