I'm thinking of changing to an L322 TD6 but I'm not sure that is a wise decision.

For starters, my username on every forum of which I am a member is p38arover!

Would I be moving from one set of problems to another. Is the L322 problematical? One thing is that any diesel L322 in my affordability range are all over 200,000 km.

I also wonder if I need another vehicle. Maybe the Forester (and a motorbike) is all we need now I'm retired.

I'm looking for one of these at the moment, and done a fair bit of research. The engines seem to be bullet proof, and everyone I talk to who has one loves them. I beleive they are far less problamatic that a P38A can be. You may need to watch out for the transmission if you get a 200K km unit, check that it has been serviced at some stage, as LR claims they are 'sealed for life' which is known not to be the case. There are plenty out there to choose from, and seem to sell slowly, so it's a buyers market for them. I have looked at 4 possibles now, and still haven't bought one - I am looking at 2 more this weekend, hopefully one of these will be right. I'm being a bit fussy though, and I'm after a low KM example. Most I have looked at have been great mechanically, but they have had a hard life carting kids to and from school, so the interiors were a bit grotty. There are some mint examples out there, and many more petrol versions than diesels, and the petrols in general have heaps less km - I wonder why...:p

More faulty goods, Ron?

p38arover
27th May 2011, 08:49 AM
One I was looking at was, as you say, a bit grotty inside, but had recently had a transmission replacement.

I suspect I'm being foolish - not uncommon for me.

While low km would be nice, now that I'm retired and a self-funded retiree, I do have to consider the pennies.

As a L322 owner Ron I will go as far as to say mine has been the most reliable, cheapest to run, best to drive vehicle I have ever had and I'll go further than that and say the 2002-2004 L322 Td6 is the best 4wd wagon ever sold in Australia period. My only issue is what do I replace mine with when the time comes?,what vehicle can carry 5 adults in comfort, use 10ltrs or less per 100,be cheaper than a hilux to service, have almost no vices and be a motoring icon all in one package. As you can tell I'm a fan and after you buy one you will be too. G'day Ron. I bought a low k td6 late last year. It has just had its 140k service. Great vehicle but the auto box was serviced at the same time. Service plus gearbox service cost $1500 but normal service is every 20,000k.
Great vehicle, nothing needed repairing (not like the old fender I had). Would recommend this vehicle any day. I too am a self funded retiree since February and am watching my pennies too. Jim

We have an '03 TD6 and apart from a number of warranty issues that were sorted out in the first 3 years it hasn't put a foot wrong.

You can't beat them esp when you consider what they are selling for these days. I cry inside when I think how much I paid for ours, and how much it is worth now, but it has been a stunning vehicle. Does everything brilliantly even fuel economy.

Be a better bet than an ageing P38 I'd think.

The owner of one of the nearby Polo places asked me about one a few years back, he was a L/Cruiser/Lexus man through and through but his young g/f wanted the Rangie.

Everyone told him not to touch them but my advice was have a really long hard look but that most of what he was hearing was alarmist hype and it'd be fine, it'd be a much nicer drive than the Lexus if they didn't mind taking it back to Newcastle for servicing.
He said big deal, the Lexus went back there anyway.

Last year he thanked for the advice, he reckons it's the best vehicle they've ever owned and this bloke has places (with vehicles) all around the world.

Amazing what a succinct, clear, and thorough post can do. I'm off to carsales dot com right after I hit submit. I knew I liked the look for the L322 or "Series 3" Rangies but had no intention of actually looking for one or being able to justify the expense of one.

I would never buy any car off a private person unless known by me or someone i trust or of a website like carsales or cars guide - IMO having had a lot of law enforcement experience with this area recently - buy only from a reputable branded dealer - and if not from a brand dealer have the vehicle checked by a brand dealer and have a V check done on the car to find out if it is a rwo or not - knowing vehicle history up front is the way to go.

Use internet sales for price shopping / comparison of prices etc.

Ron, definately you will LOVE it. as Pat says once you have one, you'll wonder why you ever waited this long. I drive other peoples and love them, I can't really justify one for myself at this point in my life as a 110 and 2 RR's are way too many at the moment, but would dearly love one one day. Very reliable, very economical to own AND run, and beautifully finished. Some minor probs like dash LCD display failures etc but that is not uncommon in lots of other vehicles, too.

I've always thought that the P38A was the best looking of all the Rangies, it also seems to be a fairly widely held belief that it has the best ride also, I'd argue that point going by mine but I still think its the best looking. It's hard to look past that L322 Diesel though... economical on top of everything else makes the car actually useable for an everyday driver.

Well Ron I'm trading up from an '99 HSE P38 to a '05 TD6 L322. Pick it up next Friday. Had NO thoughts of swapping but just went to see what the newer R.R.'s were like. I was hooked. Loved my P38( & still do) was the best car I had ever driven that is until I drove an L322. The only problem I had was 4.4 or TD6. Head one way Heart the other ended up with a TD6. Was more than I intended to spend but went for a lower mileage (106,000Kms) TD6 and great trade in price to boot.

All the best finding one Think you will not regret it

Thanks Gary. Someone traded in a P38A? Was it a dealer?

On the rough roads around Oakdale-Thirlmere-Picton where this car was were much more comfortable in the L322. The steering seemed more precise and lighter than the P38A. It was a Td6 and it seemed to pull up the hills from Picton-Mowbray Park area quite nicely.

But whether it's worth changing.......

I've a couple more to check out next week.

If you have gone to the effort of seeking them out and test driving, then you have convinced yourself allready its time to upgrade and move on from the P38.

My finances changed for the worse a fortnight ago so the P38's got to last that extra bit longer :( but your welcome to come and show off the 322 to me anytime ;)

I am really a bit concerned over most of them about having 200k's on them but people seem to think they are so much more reliable than a p38, its sort of the old, well I have a 230k old car, why would I spend allot of dosh on a 200k old car. But I guess its not apples and apples.

33chinacars

Yes Ron traded P38 at a major dealer ( not Land rover tho) Basically got nearly what I payed for the P38 15 months ago so not complaining and didn't have to sit around trying to sell it privately. Still think that the P38 is nicer to look at Just that the TD6 will be more practical for towing a van around AUS & every day use??. As I said should never have looked at a L322 but once I did was HOOKED. Sounds like you may be too. I'm only new to the fold with the P38 being my first that is if I dont count an old series 3 tray I had some 20 years ago for the farm.

Probable would never have bought either Range Rover if it hadn't been for the Fantastic advice & help from this forum

Oops. I had better go and look. My system is set up so that I don't get advice of PMs.

I've only looked and driven 3 thus far - all diesel HSEs. Only one had sat nav. They were nice but they didn't grab me. The one with sat nav had done nearly 100,000km and only one service entry stamped - the 12,000km one done by the selling dealer.

I'm starting go off the idea. Those in my price range (don't forget I'm no longer working) have similar km on the clock as my P38A.

I do think they steer and ride better than the P38A.

Now before I am put every L322 owners hit list - just kidding:D.

When I was looking at a new (used) car last year the L322 was on the list but most L322 (TD6s) were too old (2006 and earlier) and had too high KMs - though there was a nice HSE that an AULRO member in Cairns bought while I procrastinated).

There was a huge price difference between the last of the TD6s and the very first of the TDV8s making what I was after too expensive - basically new as possible and as low km as possible.

Ron i note your point on servicing of Landies.
I am of the opinion that Landies are not unreliable its the owners that are unreliable.
I find it hard to look upon a vehicle to buy when i know it has not been serviced too well. Some of the dealers/garage stamps that you find in a log book are just not worth the paper they are printed on.
I have looked at quiet a few vehicles in the last six months and im yet to be impressed by any in the up keep department, im talking basic stuff here.
Recently i drove a TD5 that has lived 500m from me for at least 6 years, its for sale. So i take a look low Ks but no water in the expansion tank, the owner was quiet happy for me to drive off in it in that state, so i did.

I love my P38 it is part of the family.
Too others its just a car.

Hi Ron can understand your frustrations in finding the right car ( hope I did altho problems just before delivery/ dealer fixing) especialy when you love your P38 as I do mine. But I think the L322 is a far better drive all round. So hang in there which ever way you end up jumping

I found plenty of nice ones diesel & petrol with 180,000kms. Still lots of kms left in them. But myself end up paying a little extra for a 107,000km model
