View Full Version : To tint or not to tint...that is the question?

Just after an idea on everyone's opinions. Obviously it is my decision ultimately but wanted to get an idea what people think...
I'm about to do the door tops on my series 3 (as soon as I've sprayed enough coats of fish oil onto the inside of them so they don't go the same way as the originals).
As a large open and non air conditioned car I'm led to think about tinting while the windows are out. I have the small 2 part sliding windows in the back which could also be done as well as the rear windows. My question is firstly, whether it helps, secondly, does it ruin the original look of the vehicle. It has a holden 6 and soon to have lpg but still retains the original look which I'd like to retain. But for practicality tinting could be good.
Matter of opinion but keen to see what the consensus is. Anyone tinted their series and willing to share pics?

I don't own a series 111 but I did have the windows on my FL1 tinted and it looks great and also cuts down on glare as well as heat!!:):)

No don't tint....
My canvas is very hot in summer but I find with the vents and windows open there is enough breeze...my zara gets parked in full sun all day, when I am at work, and only once last summer did I roll up the rear panel to get more breeze:)
A couple of the GCLRO members have hardtop series 3's and they say line the roof with a carpet or simular and it cuts down on the noise and heat :)

I have a soft top 90 and have tinted the door windows .
As said I drove all round Aus with no ac and the vents open and the windows closed and with the back shut. Was cool enough

on my 110.. it was tinted when i bought it... i want it removed.. its real dark tho...
Hot sun + black glass = heat...
Dark tint + night = impossible to see anything + reflections inside the car = nighmare!
The disco isnt tinted other than the factory slight tint.. and have no issues..

tinting heats up the glass, which heats up the car more. i use shade cloth inside, it works

Correct uv reflective tint keeps the vehicle cooler...
Without tint you'll get burnt too...
Warm glass is better than warm air...
I measured the inside temp of one of my prior vehicles without and then with dark uv rejecting film.
Was much cooler in summer sun... Something like 10c less on a 40+ day (interior was over 60c pre film)
And hence cooled quicker once opened.

My 110 has a really really dark tint and I love it, some may say even illegally dark . It was on it when I bought it . Does keep the car really cool and with two young ones handy for them on the long trips. I think it makes the ac seems like it works better too:-). As I have never had a problem with the ac in my 110

But have to agree at night can not see anything behind you. The first time I drove it at night , I parked and I had to get out of the car and walk around the back just to see if there was any thing behind me , when I went to leave. But the next day I put a rear reversing camera in so no problem now.

Well mine in its present untinted state is impossible to see out the back of at night anyway. All I get is a reflection of whats out the front, especially when backing away from the closed roller door, all you get is a big white blur in the rear window. Hence someone's earlier fitting of a spotlight on the back.

maybe mine is normal then :)
My biggest issue apart from the rear reflections is seeing kerbs etc at the side...
A trip last year to Kalbarri while it was 42 outside had my arm burning against the glass.. as the sun heated it...
Cant comment on how much heat it keeps out as the deefer is dark blue with blue roof...
Have to say tho... it does look smart ;)

When we rolled our 110 the tint held the shattered glass together preventing a glass shower.
