Hi All,
Restoring a 61 LWB Ute. Simple question - I need a wheel brace, any suggestions on were I can purchase one?
I can take the wheel nuts off with a socket set, but I'd like to purchase a wheel brace and leave it in the car.
Because I don't know the use of the nut (I've worked out that it is bigger than 21) - I could take a nut off and head off to AutoBarn or SuperCheap Auto - but if somebody has already done the hard work.
Thanks (as always).
The Grey Ghost.

 Hi Grey Ghost

My fix for that is I brought a 3/4 drive bar off fleebay and then a socket from the Super sheep store.

Much stronger than the orginal wheel brace and worked out a lot cheaper as well.

Buy a universal 4 way wheel brace from supercheap or repco. They are pretty cheap and should have one that fits. Otherwise as per the previous suggestion buy either an articulated or fixed 90 degree breaker bar and socket.

The size required is described as either 9/16"BSF or 1/2"BSW, but I don't like your chances of finding one at the local auto shop, the simplest is to take a sample nut in, and you will find that a four way brace with a 23mm socket on it will be close enough.
The other way is to go through garage sales, flea markets and op shops looking for the right one - I got a double ended sort of tube spanner, top quality forged from solid (Sidchrome) plus a breaker bar at a market for $3, apparently never been used.
The original spanner, a bent bar with a socket forged on one end, has little to recommend it. Most of the ones I own have either been badly twisted, split the socket or the socket has expanded so it slips on the nuts.

A 15/6" AF socket on an 18" breaker bar works for me.

Interestingly, that's almost exactly what the original equipment looked like. One has turned up on ebay in the last 24 hours, and looks as if it will hit an astronomical price.

That is described as 17-19mm, which will not fit.

I've got one of those too, but you still need to buy the 15/16" socket for the wheel nuts.

The handle tends to twist around as well.

Put it this way, I replaced this thing with a breaker bar.

The wheel nuts on my S2a are much larger than any normal ones ever found on a generally available wheel brace or combination tool. I ended up ordering from L. R. Series - specialists in land rover, land rover series and range rover - gearbox, axle, transmission parts, spares and major units (http://www.lrseries.com) in the UK. It was a 27mm brace. If it's one of those you're after ... good luck. I would have happily swapped several "normal" braces for one 27mm! A socket and breaker bar is probably the cheapest solution.

Yes, that link was just to give an example. I just put the correct size socket on and it does.

For the late 2a nuts, I bought an HD Defender brace from Gary CLR which has progressed to the County, for the original smaller nuts I use a (gasp) Toyota 4 way brace
