G'day,
I have an original jaeger speedo from my 80" but it has been somehow coated heavily in oil/grease during its lifetime. I'm told it operates well but it has oil/grease on face (dial) and numerals of odometer, how, without wiping off or damaging the numerals etc can I clean it?
(I have the speedo etc out of the casing and have cleaned the glass etc but stopped now awaiting advice)

While I'm at it...
2)What is the best way to get paint off of the stamped (serial) plates on firewall (early 80") (----the home "battery charger electrolysis" OK?)

and

3) off of the info/instruction plates (coloured ones etc on firewall/bulkhead inside)?

any other hints, tips tricks relating to the dials etc on these dashes appreciated, cheers....

I would try a de-greaser such as Loctite's one but test it on an inconspicuous place first, in case the dial face paint comes off.

and

3) off of the info/instruction plates (coloured ones etc on firewall/bulkhead inside)? As for 2) brake fluid won't damage etching or anodising

any other hints, tips tricks relating to the dials etc on these dashes appreciated, cheers.... If there is oil all over the gauge especially the speedo then it would be a good idea to get some advice from an instrument restorer - apparently oil can make a speedo read incorrectly.
Cheers Charlie

This is a fix of sorts !

If your handy with paintshop pro , you can draw up a new speedo face and print it out on paper of your choice , laser printers can do nice printing .. then stick it over the old faded face , it works a treat.

I did the 80" petrol gauge face and printed out a few dozen . You get about nine on a A4 sheet.

The print place in town here does the printing for almost nothing . You could even use a vinyl base or anything to print it on , the choices are almost endless

I have the petrol gauge face on a CD here somewhere , will attach it if I can find it

I've got some faces at home you might be able to use.

Check them out on Wednesday, when you come through.

This is the Morris speedo face I did years ago for my WW2 Morris Commercial.

I first scanned the faded face , opened paint shop pro, then highlighted the faded area and saved it as a jpg.

Cannot find the 80" petrol gauge ..I've lost the file

Ian, I thought you'd already left!!

Yeah, as to those other faces?? If I could fix them I'd be
some sort of miracle worker wouldn't I?!!
I'm hoping to fix the speedo and I'll be happy with that little miracle!!

May take the badly done in one out of "hoist" and see if any face remains to "play with".

Enjoy your trip mate!

this is the speedo face in question - thats as far as I have got cleaning it
(has a light coat of grease/oil still on it) -- interestingly D@rk51d3 has located this one on EBAY at the moment...

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NOS-SMITHS-2-1-2-SPEEDOMETER-70MPH-LAND-ROVER-SERIES-1-/250809638768?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a656b5f70

although not a JAEGER one , its a dead ringer... were these used in the 80" land rovers from the factory at all? or just a replacement type part?

Note that the blue ring of plastic is a light plastic and when fitted -a light globe is just outside the casing-
shining through the ring (note the slotted areas that suround the plastic to allow light in to light the dial -these dash lights are fitted to a seperate switch/// (top left corner of dash panel... (thanks for the assistance DROPSHORT!) )
