186 to original Landy oil bath air filter

G'day all, I have my 186 powered S3 Landy hooked up to the original oil bath Landy oil filter using the original rubber hose and an "L" shaped hose on the the stromberg carby. I goes quite well using about 16.5 L per 100km on a trip loaded. My question is would the 186 be getting enough air with this set up? Or should I be using an alternative paper air cleaner set up much like on many other Holden 6 conversions. Any advice on this issue would be greatly apprieciated. Ta Eddie.:)

The same aircleaner is used on the Rover six cylinder engine, so I doubt that it is a significant problem getting enough air. However, the pressure drop at full throttle may be a little more than with the paper filter, mainly due to the hose and angle. But if you are getting 16.5l/100km and going quite well, there is not a serious problem.

The oil bath should flow sufficient air. However a cellulose fibre (paper) filter of suitable size will give you significantly cleaner air.

to check for restriction you use vac gauge.
if you want to be scientific you use a manometer.
unless your reving out to the redline the air box is fine.
a rover 6 is 2.6 and these rev hard.the 3,0 holden will stuggle to breath around 4500 with a single stromberge.

if the air cleaner isnt big enough you wont get 0 vacum.
most will go on about fitting a pod filter.and never have done any real measurements.

holden last model with optional oil bath filter was EH.bedford trucks with bigger engines had almost the same unit.the EH then the changed to a foam band raped around the washable paper filter.I got some of the last old stock genuine parts for my VH commodore when it was new.it ran very rich on petrol and flooded on LPG.

problem with oil bath was the extra hydrocarbon measured in the exhaust.you often have to allow for that.it maybe as simple as different plugs.

for a tune up its worth making up a tail pipe oxygen sencor and afr kit.I made mine up from a jaycar kit but esasier to buy one that is ready made.I have fitted these to the engine pipe but a heated wide band O2 sencor works at the tail pipe if your doing a long trip.

an original holden 186 would have run at 21mph per 1000rpm.so 3000 at 100k/hr over that you need 2 barrell and camshafts.
