Has anyone fitted a trans cooler to their RR Sport?
If so, what kind and wher does it fit and connect?

I do not think you will find too many who have required more transmission cooling on either the D3 or RRS. It seems that LR did not undersize either the engine or transmission cooling on the vehicles.

The only item most would agree that seems perhaps inadequate is the fuel tank., particularly if one is towing. With regard to towing, no one seems to complain about a lack of cooling and that is where a concern would first show itself.

Regardless, I think one would know if there was a transmission oil cooling problem as the tranny, like most other geared assemblies on the vehicles has overheat sensors tied to the computer systems. That is one reason we have so many caution lights within the dash display. The jpg is of a RRS with the gasoline supercharged V8 engine. The link is to the Cutaway website where there are more pictures showing the various radiators.

Hi there Tonymet,

Have a chat with the folks at Davis Performance Landys out at Annangrove (02 9679 1978)

IIRC a couple of years back they had a RR in the workshop and had just finished working on development and fitment of a larger trans cooler.

Too long ago now for me to remember if it was a FFRR or a RRS (I had a D2 at the time). I think it was a Sport. They mentioned something about the vehicle towing a float regularly (lots of weight in a couple of hay processors).

Even if my memory is totally cactus the folk at DPL should be able to at least point you in the right direction.

Good luck in the chase.

Cheers,
Iain

Keep in mind, the ZF Transmission has specific temperature operating range, high and low, etc. I suspect, if you over cool it, it will cause other issues. I know it sounds crazy, but the ZF technical documents discuss temperature ranges, and so on and so forth..

So is it safe to assume that the transmission has over temp alarms? Might explain a random one I got at the start of a bush trip... there is some consideration when bolting winch control boxes around the area etc as it often is the only area it will mount (sometimes) and has the risk of disrupting air flow to the transmission radiator.

Would be nice peace to mind to know for sure there are alarms for over/under temp of the ZF box.

Cheers.

I could have sworn the RRS from which we removed the body a week back had a trans cooler. I remarked on it to the mechanic.

2.7 TDv6 has the trans cooler in the radiator. 3.0 and TDV8 have separate ones. Dont know about the petrol models.

My pic above is of a V8 RRS Supercharged (petrol).

There are many reports of the radiator becoming porous with age - and leaking coolant into the transmission fluid.

I reckon that adding an external transmission fluid cooler is a good idea - mainly to isolate the exxy ZF fluid and probably more efficient when the going gets tough.
