Hey everyone,
Thinking about buying a used freelander 2 as a first car :woot: . I will probabaly take it off road occasionally with friends, and down to the beach and on some sand dunes. Before i go out and buy one, I was wondering if there are any hidden problems, what the servicing and running cost are like (e.g. fuel economy, service pricing) and whether its a good car to buy. The reason I'm considreing it is because it is the only car around that is a capable 4x4 (I think ?!?!), will fit through the city easily and also has a good saftey rating. If you don't think its the right car, can you give any suggestions? Thanks.
(tl;dr --> tell me about the Freelander 2 and whether its a good first car)

A great car - get the diesel auto - good on sand - and the auto really helps if you need to do harder stuff offroad.

As stated an excellent car. I have an 08 model on 96,000 kms and never let me down. Will handle anything that its ground clearance will allow it to. If its under 3 years old I would go the Land Rover extended warranty due to the cost of major parts. Mine has been serviced at my local mechanic for the last 50,000 kms at a few hundred dollars a pop. There may be a weakness in the rear diff where it starts to whine a bit. I had mine repaired under warranty. It never caused me any trouble but thought I should mention it. The diesel auto is the pick in my opinion.

Only problem is that insurance (i online quoted with aami for a 31K 2008 car) is at 2.7k. is the car really worth that? Also, has Land Rover ironed out its reliability issues, especially the ones from the Freelander I?
Thanks :woot: :woot: :woot:

It's a completely different car from the Freelander 1. I'm on a lot of the forums and the vast majority of owners are very happy with the car.
You must be a young un to get a quote like that for insurance :). For old farts it's not any different to any other car, in fact my premium went down compared to the Subaru I traded. You might find thats what you will pay no matter what car you get? They hit under 25 males with a big stick :D

It was only the petrol FL1s that had reliabilty issues - diesels were great. My FL1 has been the most reliable car I have owned - certainly better than the Disco 1 I had.
My RRS is insured with AAMI and it is only $700 (I am old though). What I did find was that AAMI gave a different quote each time I checked with them and a different quote depending on how you did it. Renewal was $950, phone quote $1100, online was $700 so I pays to try and try again.

So did you buy it?
Another vote for 'great car' here (the td4 version).
