Hi Guys/ladies
would much appreciate the collective wisdom of P38 owners...
if in the market what are the differences, pros or cons between the 4L and 4.6L's
cheers

Basically comes down to creature comforts. AFAIK no 4.0 HSE's were sold in Oz, so a 4.0, 4.0 S or 4.0 SE will probably be missing (unless optioned):
leather interior
memory seats and auto-dipping mirrors
stereo controls on the steering wheel
front fog lamps
sun roof
extra lamps in the footwells
illuminated vanity mirror in passenger sun visor
auto-dimming rear view mirror
illuminated window switches in the rear
rear cup holders
cup holders under the lid of the cubby-box
4.0 has the HP22 transmission, and the 4.6 has the HP24 tranny, supposedly stronger. Put a HP24 in to my 1999 4.0 and couldn't pick the difference.
Not a huge difference in power. I just picked up a 2000 4.6 HSE, and it is a bit quicker than my 99 4.0 "Hard Rangie". However, my 4.0 "Hard Rangie" sounds like a 6L and sits 4" taller than the HSE, and would sh*te all over it in the dirty stuff ;)
Cheers, Paul.

I think that when you've chosen to drive the best 4x4, then you deserve the maximum of comfort. Really love my 4.6

Agreed but the level of comfort might be directionally proportional to the amount of wallet pain to keep them working.:D
