High beam on makes headlights go out

Its been ages since i had a good electricery problem.
Has been doing it intermittently but last night does it all the time.
Driving with the main beam on is fine, pulling back on the overtaking/flash mode the high beam comes on and the blue high beam indicator in the dash comes on.
But then when you flick the stalk forward to turn the high beams on, the headlights go out not even the blue high beam indicator goes on. have to put them back on low beam to get the lights back on. ( great fun when you live in a rural area)

Googling seems to suggest its the indicator/light switch itself, has anyone else had this as a problem?
or is it as simple as a fuze??
will try to work the wiring out through the RAVE and see what i can come up with.

A few things to check first. Do you have uprated headlight bulbs and wiring? If you do, then it could be as simple as a faulty relay. I had the same problem with one of my relays not long after updating my headlights and wiring. There should be a relay/s some where in the standard wiring so check these out also if you dont have the upgraded wiring/bulbs. Bob

thanks mate, but no everything is stock standard, i though it might be a relay but they go on with the flash mode, so that sort of cancels that out I think, am more inclined to think its the actual switch itself.

Had the same problem with the Rangie.

Got worse and worse over the weeks until there were suddenly no headlights. (not good on a winding country road at midnight doing 100km/h)

New switch and one of Drivesafe's kits and she's all good again.

Yep, had this happen with my D1. The switch on the stalk had sh*t itself with old age - fortunately had a good replacement that I got off flea bay for $10.

at the moment it appears the switch is the culprit, have just bought a new one from a Uk supplier I sometimes use, I am shocked at the local prices for the same thing, $254 australian whereas the british price is 61 pds or 94 dollars plus $9 delivery (but i got a couple of other things too)
i remember reading a post about justification from local sellers as to local costs etc but that is a hell of a markup from 94 to 254.
I should have it by the end of next week.

had the same problem on a couple of toyotas i had before i buried them it was the stalk. once changed the problem never raised its head again. if my disco ever does it ill just buy new and be done with it for another couple of hundred thousand kms
