Hi guys,
Im looking at buying a 95' 2.5l Turbo Diesel Discovery. Are they any good?
I've been told that they we're legendary for break downs. The one i'm looking at has just over 400K on the clock. The owner says he semi reconditioned the engine. Looking at the receipt he provided, it looks like he has only replaced the clutch. Would it be worth it in the long run (it will be a daily driver).
Any help is much appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Tom

"Legendary for breakdowns" - absolutely. If you look after them they won't break down ;)
400K and only a clutch receipt - personally I'd walk away.
There are still plenty of 300tdi D1's around with only 2-300K, and a few with less, so unless there is something else special about this one give it a miss (eg full service history, showroom condition, or lots of extras, or the owner only wants $2K for it).

Yeah, I think i'll give it a miss then. It's all stock except for a after market bull bar. Also has rust on the seals. Thanks for the help. Much Appreciated.

Yeah but i'm not allowed another car if you know what I mean. Only way I can get a landy is if I trade my Jag for one.

Well, I have a '95 and have owned it since it was one year old. There are a lot of things that can go wrong and you have to be handy with a spanner (as with any Land Rover, right?).
Now, if the truck you are willing to buy is
16 yrs old and
has 400k on the clock
the odds are that all faulty items that can break have done so already. If not, they probably last another 400k. If the lad only has one receipt that would be fine for me, because all other serviceable items must have been done at some point. For how long has he be owning the truck btw?
Important checks are the cambelt, oil consumption and main shaft condition (if it's a manual). Oil leaks (outside), water leaks (inside). Other serviceable items like wheel bearings, clutch and brakes are routine stuff. On a vehicle of that vintage that was used appropriately you would expect some corrosion/battle damage. Just make sure the chassis is alright.
To summarise, if the price tag is alright, I'd go for it.

We have a 95 Disco 300Tdi with 300k on the clock and are very happy with it. A bit of rust around the opera windows is normal and cheap to get fixed.
The tdi is an excellent engine, which is why the British Army has favoured it for remote work for a decade. The four-speed auto is also excellent. They are very capable vehicles and not complicated. They just need regular oil changes and normal maintenance.
Ours is insured for $6k because its an ES in excellent condition with lots of extras, but most would cost less than that.
