Went to look at a 1998 SE7 the other day, It was advertised as being in Excellent condition, Their opinion of this obviously differs from mine!

Overall it presented very well, paint is very good, with only 1 noticable ding and a couple of spot of corrosion under the paint on the doors, inside was clean and tidy.

The motor has had a new head and it has some service history, fairly sketchy with intermittent stamps in the log book.

Finally got it started, flat battery, and took it for a test drive.

Very sluggish, feels like no boost
auto holds gear too high
rear windows do not work
A/C does not work
Radio does not work, has CD under passenger seat
Has play in front diff or prop shaft
Headlining starting to sag
Needs a new belt tensioner
A Few oil leaks

As you can see it is in EXCELLENT condition lol!

I am handy with the tools and think most of the things would be an easy fix, kickdown adjustment, loose connections etc, but there is always the possibility that they wont and it will cost $$$.

Question is what would you pay for it?

Km?

Add up what you've listed, assume worst case scenario.

Turbo: $500-2000 (2nd hand/reco/new)
Auto: $3000-4000 (rebuild/exchange)
Windows: $500 (diagnosis + ECU)
A/C: $500-1500
Radio: $100-250
Front diff/prop shaft: $500 (2nd hand diff)
Headlining: $250-500
Tensioner: $250-300
Oil leaks: $100-1000

It might be fine for a project car but time to walk away unless you like working on cars IMO.

220K

I would do all the work myself.

I have a feeling that the kickdown is adjusted too tight, so it is holding gear too long.

I also think the wastegate actuator rod may not be connected.

I did not check these out at the time, only had a brief look and drive

Waiting to hear back so I can have a more in depth look over it.

I do like working on cars, just not all the time!

In that case, you can use the faults to your advantage as bargaining power.

The new head is a plus but you'd need to ask if a new one fixed whatever problem it had (could still have a stuffed radiator that cooked the old head for example).

Personally, I think it sounds like a $2500 - $3500 car, providing it's in roadworthy condition now.

I agree!

He is asking significantly more though, It amazes me how people can list a vehicle as in excellent condition with such obvious faults.

I would be prepared to pay a bit more depending on further inspection as it was very tidy, just the problems will need thorough investigation, will wait and see.

Sad thing is somebody that doesn't know what too look for will be suckered in by the shiny paint and clean interior, and buy an ever increasing money pit.

just the problems will need thorough investigation, Unfortunately, that's hard to do when it's not your car.

It's not an uncommon model so I'm sure a better one will catch your eye soon enough :).

I agree with Scouse there are plenty of D1s out there that have a good service history which is the key. Take your time and be selective.

I am definately not going to rush into anything!

Only reason I am looking is because my Disco has a lot of blowby and is pretty beat up now, I could re ring the motor, but I like the idea of something a bit newer and better looking, other than the blowby it is mechanically solid, so I will hang onto her as long as I need to.

Getting back into mine it drove like a dream compared to the one I looked at.

Cheers

Just out of interest, what would you consider a good price for this model?

I know it depends on condition, history etc, but as a ball park for:

Excellent, full history, A1 condition - $
Very good, full history, few minor issues - $
Good, full history, dings, minor issues - $
Average, some history, dings, minor issues - $
Below average - forget about it
