engine saver installation

Hi All,

Just installed my new engine saver and wanted to make sure the installation was Ok with regard to placing the temp sensor on the cyl head. Please have a look at the attached pic and advise if the connection (grey cable) just behind the fan is a good location for the temp sensor. many thanks, just want to make sure. cheers ;)

G'day.
Were you have it mounted is in front of the timing chain so a little removed from where the heat builds up.
I have mine bolted to the rear of the head.
This was recomended to me as it is next to the water jacket.
It's on a spare threaded web above the heater pipe.

I'll see if I can find a picture and add it.

Gday shamirj. I have mine secured to the bolt just below where you have it. This bolt is about at least 150mm long so it should give a fairly good indication of core engine temp. Where have everyone else put theirs?

I've had a hunt and can't find a photo;)

The hole is near the rear of the two brackets that hold the water pipe above the exhuast manifold.
It is a spare spot and Davy suplied a bolt in my kit to fit it here.

Hope that helps explain it better.


I'll add that when I drive it and it starts to work hard it sets the buzzer of when mounted here.
I then tweak the dial till the buzzer stops and picks up head temprature well here.

By water jacket - do you mean thermostat housing???

The instructions that came with mine specifically said NOT to have the sensor attached to the water jacket. The aim of the system is to measure the temp of the metal in the engine rather than being influenced by the water temp.

G'day Garry,
It is bolted onto the head where I believe there is less heat fluctuation.
Unfortunantly I can't take a pic. of it fitted as the head is on the work bench.
If mounted to a thermostat housing there would be greater fluctuations in tempratures.
(The original picture shows a TD5 motor, their thormostats are in the botom hose.)

And whilst we're at it. where have people put their coolant level detector on a TD5?

I assume in the 4 way hose?

Top radiator bleader screw removed and fitted with the sensor provided.

And what about the wiring for this. I have connected straight to the battery so is on all the time along with my direct connection for the volt meter (digital). how do i now turn this into only coming on when ignition is on. I know i need to find a live wire somewhere behind the dash (suggestions) thats active when ignition is turned on, but i have direct wires coming from the battery for the volt gauge that i am using. do i cut into the ignition wire only and disregard the battery wires completely but this will not read the volts? wiring the engine saver should be easier but what about my volt meter. pls help ;)

I hooked mine up to one of the ignition only fuses in the under dash fuse box.

For your volt meter you could use the same ignition source for the volt meter, it'll oly work with ignition then.

thanks Alien d2, pulled the stereo out again and pinched a wire which only activated with radio when ignition on, so working sweetly. not permanent yet but need to tidy up the wires so more. temp reads 75degrees celcius which is a bit hot i would have thought. thinking to set the engine saver to 80 degrees before the alarm sets off. cheers ;)

75 seems Ok - my V8 sits on 72. The instructions say to set about 10-15 higher than warmed up engine temp. I would agree as on a warm day after a drive sitting in traffic mine can go to 80 - water temp stays on 80 through all the time.
