I've got a Disco 1 with the 300TDI motor and the alternators **** itself i have a BUT load of bosh alternators and other miscelanious ones.
What i want to know is the one thats in the vehicle died and i'm looking to replace it with any altertenative. I heard that there are issues with noise out of the alternators just wondering if i can get a BOSCH to fit then would it be fine with the electrics etc??

The only thing the Bosch alternator will need (except if you have an XE-XF Falcon type, they have this connection already) is for you to open it up and solder a piece of wire to one of the three stator solder joints. You need this for the tacho connection (white/grey stripe wire in loom). Other than that its just a case of making it fit. Post 1989 alternators with the 2 pin plug on the regulator can be used too, just loop the +12V sensor wire from the plug to the alternator output terminal. This is a common trick to use VN Commodore alternators on earlier Holdens.

Dunno, OEM Bosch alternators are fitted to anything that has a motor, you'd think they had sorted it. Like, they have little suppressor caps fitted to their output terminals. Anyway, what electronics on a 300TDi are you concerned with? The radio????? central locking? Last I heard D1 diesels didn't have an ECU.:):):)

Chris it is very hard to find a configuration that fits a 300Tdi, the alternator legs are in an unusual spacing and shape. Best to just refit the right one I have found, as the belt will be right length etc etc. 200Tdi you can easily fit a Ford Bosch one, or a Mitsubishi unit as they are completely different to the 300Tdi, single groove V belt for a start.

G'day Chris,

Why not buy online form the U.K?
I got a replacement for <$200 to my door, not sure about the longevity but it has been working fine now for 9 months.
Just a thought

Cheers

Just ensure that any of these aftermarket cheaper alternators are actually genuine Marelli/ Denso. I have seen unbranded ones for sale 'Pattern copies' that are junk.

Good to hear Frank, but I have seen ones with no labels, average casting finish and supposedly sold as OE quality that are definately of serious substandard quality, sold for around the $350 mark.

If you can make up a bracket and get the pulley onto it so that you get to keep everything else the same, go for it. Sounds like your cash poor time rich so go for it.

What would be the actual draw that the vehicle would use i'm assuming that it wouldn't use anywhere near the full 100amps. Does anyone know what i can get away with i'm just wanting to get something in there so that i can get things happening and when the $$$'s permit i will put the proper alternantor in there.

Chris, a 300Tdi using heater blower and demister etc this time of year really could use 65A at least. The Defender has the 65A rating Alternator, strangely enough they are just as expensive:mad: so we fit the Disco 100A unit to Defenders as an upgrade.

Use the search function as there are forum members who have fitted a bosch 120amp generic fit alt in place of the magnetti, its only a matter of a couple of small brackets and changing over the pulley.
