Gearbox problems

Hi all. We are on the way to Darwin. My mates 300tdi defender (r380) has developed a noise in the gearbox yesterday. He says it sounds like a bearing noise but it's only in fourth gear and not always present. Sometimes there, sometimes not. No other gears, just fourth. Any advise from the technically skilled???

really difficult to know, but being in the situation you are in (ie holiday trip) I would find a good local mechanic, dump the existing oil (and see what comes out;)), fill it with a good syntrans or 75/80 etc manual gearbox oil and even put in a Nulon type gearbox additive. All of the above MAY help and wont cost the earth. It might just behave itself. I hope so.

Just an update. It sounds like more of a chatter. Worse if u pull the shifter towards fourth while driving. Syncro's rattling???
