Is there a way to fix I clutch bearing in the outback I have a few tools and some grease

not as far as I am aware, however, if all else fails and no one else can hekp with advice, you can put the vehicle in low range, you will then be able to change gears pretty easily without the clutch.

Just put it in low 1st, start her up and you will be rolling. It is pretty easy to 'feel' the next gear change.

Should at least get you close to some help.

Goodluck.

The clutch still works and changes gears it is making a loud high pitched sound under load, when the clutch is in it stops, it pretty hot as well with a bit of smoke is there a way to force some grease into it or is that not the problem when the bearing goes I had a mechanic say it would be fine to get me to where I need to go just change it when I get there

And another thing the bloody speedo went and the km counter are they related

Yes they are...

Check your speedo drive on the gearbox... (Left hand/Passengers side)

Something may have come adrift, leaking oil out causing the whine in the gearbox too......

The clutch in my D1 is a dry plate clutch, ie no grease or oil should get onto the clutch plate. a bit of grease does go onto the centre hub, just to help it back and forward, but it sounds to me the problem you have is with the friction plate...sounds to me like it is worn out? but that's my best guess.

Is there any 'slip' when you accelerate, like the clutch is disengaging when under load?

Mines a d1 tdi as well , no slip at all apart from the high pitched noise you'd think nothing was wrong, except for the smoke that is

correction, just checked my manual, noise from gearbox in neutral, which disappears when clutch is depressed, is listed as a gearbox fault.

It may also be a worn release bearing as you say , but that does not seem to account for the speedo as far as I know?

Trouble shooting advice is to check gearbox fluid level, if low, do not top up, first drain fluid and check for contamination or metal particles.

Sorry mate, best I can do from my living room:D

EDIT - if this is the case ( metal in gear box oil) suspects are worn bearings on layshaft, primary shaft, or front of main shaft.

EDIT - just checked further, if there is no noise when you depress the clutch, it is NOT the release bearing....this is starting to sound like a gearbox problem, rather than clutch.

G'day Alexi :)

First up let your gearbox cool down and then check it for oil, filler plug should be on the side square nut from memory, dip your finger in the hole if no oil, that could well be the problem, if not it is the clutch release bearing (throwout) which will scream if dry, BUT check that the bolt retaining you speedo drive has not come out and emptied you gear/transfer box :( if it has you should be able to hold it in with wire, but if you box is dry (smoking) then if you do not have spare oil, it is a long VERY SLOW crawl to the next town in 1-2 low :(;)

cheers

Still going through the manual for you - if there is no judder or jump when you accelerate...and no slip as you say....sounds more and more like a gearbox problem.

but if you box is dry (smoking) then if you do not have spare oil
Any oil will do in an emergency eg engine oil, automatic g/box oil.

G'day Alexi :)

150 Klm at 20KPH where were you,was there not a town closer, even if you had to backtrack? and if you were where I think you were, (Birdsville or Tanami tracks,or up the Cape) why were you not carrying spare oil, water, belts etc.:( If that box had seized, you would have been history.

Unprepared travellers in the outback have died from as little as lack of water when they have broken a fan belt :(

cheers

It wasn't really 150km, a bit of an exaggeration(it felt like it though), about 70ks i worked out, luckily for me Telstra finally came through and allowed me to use my wireless internet.

To UncleHo, i had heaps of water, heaps of oil, coolant, grease, tools. Everything except spare belts(and major parts) i've learnt my lesson now, i have to do everything myself.

Quote of convo with mechanic "I'm taking a trip in two weeks, it will be about 2500ks, then the same distance two weeks later, can you check everything to make sure its ok?"
Mechanics reply "All good mate, your front handbrake end uni joint needed replacing everything else was fine"

My reaction to find that the transfer case was bone dry and the gearbox bung was basically fused in place was to think maybe a recommendation to see the "BEST MECHANIC IN MT ISA" was total BS, this guy services the local police vehicles for christs sake.

Anyway, does anyone have a spare gearbox and transfer case they don't need:D:D.

Or a more realistic approach anyone know of a good place to get a recon around north NSW coast, southeast QLD(i managed to borrow a car to finish my trip, i really needed to get to NNSW).

Once again thanks to everyone for the advice and help, i owe you all a beer, i'm honored to be part of such a generous community.
