P38 Subwoofer Replacement

Hi all,
The sub in my 97 Rangie has been sick for a while now, so yesterday I took the time to remove the cd stacker and sub box to access the 8" sub spkr.
Talk about sick, the entire flexible part that normally connects the cone to the frame was completely gone and in bits at the bottom of the sub box.

I intend to replace with a same spec spkr and was wondering if anyone out there can tell me the exact spec of the standard speaker so that I can match one and ensure that I don't damage the matched amp

From what I can tell the original speaker is an 8" dual voice coil, but not sure on the impedance and watts. anyone out there know this additional info? Have done numerous searches on the web but can't seem to locate the specs.

No need to replace the speakers. I had the same issue.
Purchased a kit online to replace the foam surrounds for about $30 from Speakerbits ...it includes surrounds, glue, shims to ensure proper alignment and full instructions. Result was very successful...never heard them sound so good!!

Thanks Hoges. Good idea, but speaker is shot completely.
Still looking for the full specs. Might try car stereo specialist tomorrow

Are there no markings on the back of the speaker showing impedance, e.g., 4 ohm, 8 ohm?

No markings on the speaker at all.
Checked the impedance with a multimeter and confirmed 4ohms per voice coil.

Have purchased a 8" dual voice coil 4ohm unit from Ryda. Hard to find 8" subwoofers these days. Everyone goes for the 12".

Anyway waiting on delivery. Wasn't sure on the watts of the old one. New one is 100watts rms. Hopefully will match ok to existing amp. Fear I may get some clipping though as I don't think the original amp will be up near the 100 rms mark.

Will post result once installed.

Ok,

Here's my solution.

Followed wanglemoose's advice below and went to Jaycar today.
Bought a single voice coil 60w rms sub.

Now to wire as single voice coil by using the dual voice coil amp output I did the following.

1. Assuming an approximate 20w rms output from the amp I purchased 4 500uF capacitors.
2. I soldered one to each of the 4 wires coming from the amp and then joined the free terminals of capacitors joined to positive cables from each twisted pair to each other and similarly each negative cable to each other.
3. I then following the same polarity soldered a cable from the negative and the positive pair of capacitors to the same terminals on the new speaker.

Here is a basic wiring diagram.

Works really well.
