G'day all, have used search, can't see anything on this topic (mans look excepting) ...

I have a 2004 D2 td5 Auto, just under 140k on the clock, owned from new, serviced as per log book.
FPR replaced twice, battery replaced twice, EGR removed, silicon hoses, Safari snorkel, K&N filter (fitted at 134k). 255/70 R16 BF Goodrich A/T tyres

Last long haul trip was up to Coral Bay over Easter. Average consumption was 17.3L/100km (towing a camper trailer and with a roof rack and kayak on top).

Recently put the oil (Synpower 5W40) through analysis (oil was changed 3500km ago).
Analysis has reported:
- Iron is elevated (26mg/L)
- Water is elevated (0.046 %w/w)
- Fuel dilution is elevated 4.5 %w/w)

Should I be worried?

Do you do lots of short trips?

Also, go back to a paper filter.

yep, used daily for the run to / from train station ...
agree on the paper filter, I'd hoped to see an improvement in fuel economy but this has not materialised and I think the risk of engine wear with the K&N does not justify continued use

can I take it there's nothing to worry about? the elevated iron/water/fuel content is because I make lots of short trips?
any reason why lots of short trips would elevate these items?
has anyone else doing oil sampling?

should I increase the frequency of oil change (has been done every 20,000km until now?

I normally change my 2002 Disco's Td5 engine oil and both filters every 15000km. (on average about every 6 months) That is in conditions that are not generally dusty or hot with not a lot of towing and mainly in regional areas. It has 197000Km on it. If I am doing "heavy" towing (1300kg camper van) I do it at around 10000Km intervals. I grease the prop shafts every 5000Km.

If you do lots of short trips (engine never warms up properly)the engine maintenance falls into a different catergory,,

wheres Blknight or Ric when you need them?:D

Hi Mate,
Changing oil every 20K sounds way too high, I have a V8 and change oil every 10K, my TD Hilux work ute oil is changed every 10K. A lot of people I know change oil every 5K in TD's, I would recommend at least every 10K (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
Cheers Matt
