Heyy people...at long last have found myself a 130..finally..1995 Tdi 130
Picked it up for 4 grand...needs a lot of work..mainly cosmetic, but it will save me from thrashing the wifes D2.
Im quite impressed with this little motor...gotta love the torque. Definately no rocket...but great for puttin around in

The obligatory AULRO sticker!!!..I know there was a reason I brought 2

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/06/779.jpg

Interior...bit of work to do in here..2 spare door skins to fit..joy..defender trim clips to source

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/06/780.jpg

Long Ranger fuel tank....sender wires have to go somewhere. Apparently it runs out of fuel after 60L , so something to sort out with the pickup...any ideas?

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/06/781.jpg

Engine, c/w broken dipstick pipe..air con belt missing...apparently 2 different types of belts. Will try tracking down previous owners re; timing belt..at 270k it should have been done a few times...I hope

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/06/771.jpg Battery tray...hmmm...dont ya love peoples previous wiring jobs...any ideas to the role of all this ?

Slowly getting used to the defender driving style...a bit of backlash in the drive train, and an indicator assembly on order from landrover, followed by a Traxide wiring upgrade.

Also on the cards is a 12000lb Tigerz winch, HID's, and some barwork...stay tuned

Looks like a good score for 4K, I wish I could find one so cheap!

Looks good mate. I would get that timing belt done though. I did mine when I bought it and man was it on it's last legs.

Good buy for 4k the above wiring is for aircon, plug those wires back into the relay and see if it works once you get a a/c belt.

If it has healthy backlash, then after checking the drive flanges pull off the PTO cover and check the output shaft.
My '95 had healthy backlash and had worn the splines nicely.
A new input gear, cross drilled with extra spline engagement will save a gearbox mainshaft overhaul for a goodly length of time

Well here's hoping that there are no major surprises

I have a new set of drive flanges on order from Ebay, plus dipstick and trim clips from the UK.

Needs a major degrease, then I can start pin pointing all the oil leaks..pinion seals, output seals etc etc

MacFamily..thanks for the heads up re: the aircon, I'm assuming what I have fitted is the "Australian fitted aircon"

$4k is great value, at that price you can afford a lot of new stuff to bring it back up to spec, or even fit an isuzu 4BD1T with a MSA 5 speed/LT230.

My dream 130 would also have a Perentie rear end, gal chassis, and a stretch cab with a double b-pillar and wagon tub setup.

You are right on the dollar. The company that built that particular A/C unit are now broke... no bloody wonder, they are a ***** of a thing to work on.
I overhauled the one in my old 130 early this year, so good luck!
You can find a shed load of knowledge here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/61123-air-conditioning-heating.html

Alternatively, rip the lot out and install a red dot like Towe0609. It cost just under $4000 though... but I bet he can now move his knees in the passenger seat:angel:

Regarding your fuel pickup issue: - my pickup pipe (in a standard tank) had rotated nearly 90 degrees so it was no longer sitting in the bottom of the tank. I only found it when I pulled the pickup / level sender unit out.
In fact it was rotated such that it interfered with the sender float- even when I completely drained the tank, the fuel gauge read half full.

Scott

Always could!

Good score for $4k - good luck with bringing it back to life.

Well...the defender is still going...sortoff

To date have sorted
New axles and drive flanges...HEAPS better
New factory floor coverings
Fitted stereo from the rangie..gee 4" speakers rock:(
Brass bleed plugs in radiator and thermostat housing..fun when they seize and shear off..

Still to do
Replace dipstick tube
Replace top radiator house..bracket on the waterpump has chewed into it almost all the way through !!!
Radiator flush/rodding...gets up to 3/4 on the temp guage on the hwy:o
Drivers door skin to fit once the lock is sorted

Now the fun parts where some help would be appreciated

It has developed a very bad case of stopping and starting whilst driving..engine cuts out..starts again...cough splutter, starts...stops
So far I have removed the turbo timer and the remnants of the immobiliser......hopefully this may fix the problem..if not I guess its filters, sedimenter thingo and lift pump gauze filters etc.

Now while removing the imobiliser i came across a terminal block behind the dash which looks it is supposed to have a relay in it, except it has a red jumper wire fitted(see pic below)
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/07/951.jpg

...Aircon???..relay??..any thoughts?

And the factory canopy..what a work of art..does anyone have some pics of where all the straps and ropes tie off to ???

Gday Nelo

Cannot help with the terminal block, but in regards to the old girl starting and stopping check the wire on the top of the injector pump for the cutoff switch.

Sometimes the terminal can get crap under it or could be lose, i have in the past bumped this and car would not start took me a day to figure it out and also another time the car stalled on the wife on a roundabout while 7months pregnent :o all because I bumped this wire the day before.

Hi All

That crimp connector and the one on the starter solenoid from the switch wire do get loose on their wire's, in time. So it's best to replace them if they are becoming dodgey.

Cheers Arthur

Yeah Im thinking more and more that its the solenoid...though the sedimenter had heaps of crud in it..which is its job after all I suppose.

This morning after I removed all the dodgy immobiliser and turbo timer it stopped again in a mates driveway...so still no closer to a solution

I've given the connection a good wiggle and cleanup...here's hoping it works and i don't get stuck half way to the pistol club tomorrow!

Got some rotary locks today so I can fold down the back seat with just the flick of a catch....$60.00ish

Just need to make up some brackets..stay tuned

Mind if I ask where you found those locks?

might have to pick some up myself ;)

Woah almost forgot about my thread!

The catches were brought from Industrial Rubber in Perth, p/no EB400-1 tight and left, striker EB400-52. Still sitting in the back of the work ute and havent got around to fitting them yet

Overheating has been sorted with new Britpart radiator..so I thought, until the viscous hub died

Currently fitting a set of 285/75 Federal muddies on 8inch -25 rims..rims I managed to get off Gumtree in Adelaide for $300(thought $150.00 in freight booked up to work:twisted:)

Pics of the wheels and tyres to be uploaded tomorrow, as well as everything all set up for our camping trip up towards Balladonia this weekend

This is where the RELAY DIM-DIP (R126) would go if it had one (not installed on Aussie LR's) it would originally have had a dummy relay which was just a short circuit in a square red box. Either leave it as is or cut the two red/blue wires from the socket and solder them together for a more reliable solution.

Ever wondered how far 285/75's on 16" -25 offset rims stick out ??

Well time for another update... After taking the 130 for a swim amongst the rocks on the beach, bending a rim a trailing arm and seeing how far underwater rover headlights work:o :wasntme: things have progressed slowly

After a good bath and lots of crc ...up on stands it went

Wheel bearings, and brake pads to start with
Remove sill panels so I can fit some sliders
Let's get handbrake light and diff lock switch working
Remove drivers side floor and tunnel
Oh look rust in the footwell.. Add to list of things to do
.....and insert a month break
Wife decides on trip to the Rock later this year
Tells me to get car fixed and buy what I need :p
Spend up big on eBay
As expected.. Sea water and starter motors don't agree.. Nor do alternators... So both of them needed rebuilding....
Hmm now there's a squeak
Replace bearing in tensioner
Silicon hoses ordered so let's remove and flush intercooler
Hmm radiator might need to be checked
Water pump pulley bit wobbly... Better change that and the p gasket
What the hell... Let's check the timing belt...waaaaay overdue
Waiting on parts... Let's check valve clearance..all ok
Heater core needs to be replaced so let's pull that out..and yes I have aircon:mad:
Passenger side footwell bit rusty... List getting longer
Foam collapsed in seat backs...so out they come
The underseat storage is really quite tight for 2 batteries and storage... Let's deepen them.. So out the seat box comes.....after removing tailshaft and handbrake drum to disconnect handbrake

Make mental note.... Pick 1 thing to fix at a time !!!!!

Seems you're well underway on saving her.:) Saw this thread for the first time just now, was going to mention the cooling system plugs and the bottom hose but that's sorted. Apparently the black header tanks have a habit of splitting and it's customary to replace it with a whitish one as well. When you do the timing belt check if it has the good crank drive pulley and hopefully the bearing for the idler on the timing case cover is good, sort of need a whole timing cover otherwise. Good luck, you'll get her singing again...:D
Edit, I mean the fan bearing, not idler.

nealo
1st April 2013, 03:15 PM
It never ends !! The bearing for the fan is a bit rumbly, but will order a new one... There is an ebay seller in Hobart that lists them.... Very very careful job replacing that one !
I've also been instructed to make it quieter !!

Ok ... As I'm waiting for parts and I have run out of things to fix ...no not really... I have removed the pto cover and bearing housing on the transfer case... Can I pull the mainshaft out to check it or do I have to remove the transfer from the gearbox ?

nealo
7th April 2013, 02:31 PM
Sorted ! Just have to have the gears lined up just right ! And not a moment too soon !!!

Any recommendations for a replacement cross drilled gear ? Ashcroft ?
Bearings are overdue for replacement also

7th April 2013, 04:13 PM
Chuck a new cross drilled from whom ever in
You will find that a cross drilled will actually engage on about 25mm of those unused splines deep in your picture which by my rough calculations will give you about 6 years of general abuse before you need to think about the main shaft

Your main looks like my '95 did before I stuck a cross drilled in just after purchase.

It is getting skethcy about now

Once that sort term fix is done its day well then like me your looking for an R380 rebuild ;)
