Hi All,
well as I am about to head out.. i've grabbed my keys from the usual hook only to see that my key has come out of the fob.... I have the fob but the key is no where to be found.
I've just spent the last hour tearing the house apart as well as searching outside for it.
To top if off, I think my battery is going on my fob so it's not working to let me into see whether it may have fallen on the floor....
*sigh*
So....
Is there anyother way to gain access to opening the doors when a key is missing and the fob battery is being temper-mental?
If we called out some one like RACV would they be able to help to get into the car OR do I need to call a locksmith that specialises in autos???
I'm hoping that maybe the key fell on the floor drivers side?
Any help from here would be reeeeeeeeeeeeeally appreciated.
Thanks
Lp

hmm, where's the spare key?
it never came with a spare key when I bought it... it only had one key :-(...
Anyhooo the RACV guy came and even he didn't know how to get into it - WT!!
So... my dilemma now is that... we got into it... but no key....
is it now a matter of getting an auto locksmith out and if so... do you know what the process is on what they need to do... do you or anyone else out there know of costs?
Thanks

I assume you have had a check of the handbag for the key?
the entire HOUSE is short of a bomb site ... I have a baggallini Messenger bag as my everydayer which consists of a phone, purse and coin purse def no handbags here LOL... :-p
but seriously though... anyone know what sort of costs i'll be up for with a locksmith as obviously I need a key. If it's not inside then it's not inside. THe only other place would be under the carport but even then i've looked 3 times with the spotlight to no avail...
I'm assuming it's gone to one of those places that little people like along with my watch (which is a whole other story)....

I've just had a look at brit car UK and they have an ignition key with transponder. I don't care for the transponder as I have mine... but the iginition key - is there a particular code or something i'd be needing to look at for the model/series I have??
I have no idea if keys are all cut the same or slightly different??
Any thoughts?

My first call would be to land rover to see if they can use your car serial numbers and proof of ownership to have blank key blade cut for you.
Have you checked in the ignition?
Basil135
15th June 2011, 09:10 PM
Just a thought, have you looked in the ignition barrel?
Thinking that the blade may have pulled out of the fob when you took the key out last.
You obviously turned the car off, so the last known place is in the ignition.
If its there, it will certainly be cheaper to get it removed, and re-assembled with the fob.

I have a slight twitch from going temporarily mad but that's ok - I can deal with it.
Upon much closer inspection it's in the ignition - quite happy to own up to being an idiot for not thinking to look there so thank you and...
THANK YOU everyone for your help and replies :-D, it really is much appreciated.
One last question though, is it better to get RACV out (again) or to get a locksmith to do the work?
Also, the red light on the dash to indicate that the alarm is on is flashing like crazy - will that drain alot of the battery at all??
Thanks,
Lp

Glad that is one problem solved. If you ring the RACV, they should be able to let you know if it is something they can deal with, or may even arrange a locksmith if necessary.
Cant see the flashing alarm light causing any major battery drain. Should be good until the morning.
BTW - I am sending my kids your way for a couple of weeks for a holiday... :D

With the key out glue it into the fob with some super glue. go to a locksmith and they will have a non fob blank have it cut keep it in a magnetic holder under the car somewhere. you can use a non fob key by using the code in the manual.
Order your second key from OS and have your mechanic programme it.

I'm assuming you have learnt a lesson here. You need a spare key. By the way they are all cut different. We would be in a lot of brown stuff if they were all the same. The only thing that is the same is the blades.
Also looks like there was a race between who found the key first, was it Nankas then Basil or vice versa.
One other thing I have seen some dirt cheap Fobs (excluding the circuit board). I think there is one cheaper in HK. (I believe these are good prices).
Look at the last one folks.

and the battery is very common and cheap,,
and needs two seconds with a small flat blade screwdriver to install,,
IIRC,,,
take key ring off
insert small flat blade into slot in the body of the lock (put your glasses on--)where the ring slips through, twist and the lid should pop up,,

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies :-D...
I've found the key - and it wasn't in the ignition as thought!! Where did I find it... balancing on one of the kids toy box plastic crate handles - WT!!!
Elated at finding and re-attaching my key and fob.... i've gone to insert the key into the door lock only for it to NOT be able to be inserted all the way in - WHAT!!! TO top it off, I can't even lift UP nor DOWN the snib!! SO RACV have stuffed my door lock - great - NOT!
As for replacing the battery, the RACV man tested the battery and said it was fine but i'm still going to order one for my own sanity.
--------------
As a side note though and hope someone can comment:
from time to time on the odd occassion the fob doesnt want to work so I have had to use the key in the lock scenario to unlock it. Is this a normal occurrance or just something getting tripped up somewhere?
--------------
Here we are paying Total Care membership and for what - so angry now...
Is anyone able to provide me where in the RAVE manual it has a layout of the door lock / snib component please?? I'm hoping to print this off and show it to the next person and will be asking them if they have worked on a landrover before they even touch it!!
Lastly, thanks everyone for the replies about the replacement keys. I'm already looking into that one. My husband said someone from work told him he could get one w/ the fob for around 130.00 or 180.00 (can't remember)... but generally speaking whats the price range others have had to fork out for a spare key/fob?...
Thanks

Definitley get another key/fob ... but, also get 2x spare emergency keys.
Take your existing key to any locksmith, and ask them to cut you a plain flat key (fobless). This can be used with the EKA to unlock the D2 & dissable the alarm/immobiliser. (Instructions are in your owners manual)
Keep 1 in the house / keep the other somewhere external (under) the D2 ... and remember the EKA (mines written on the plastic bag the flat key is stashed in).
Practice unlocking & de-immobilizing the D2 with said key .... just so you're familiar with how it's done.

well - I had another RACV man out to fix the lock and snib... his response when I asked him what was wrong after he'd done the work:
"well I couldn't really see anything because it is a sealed unit and I think it just needed lubrication... and maybe the wire was a little bent..."
Interesting as now I will need to fight it out with RACV to fix my door properly the way it was. What a load of bull IMO...
Thanks Fluids for your reply. I wasn't sure if it was a standard key that could be cut for it so i'll add that and the code to my todo list :-D
Cheers,

Great advice Kev.
Go to a proper locksmith too, not a hardware shop. You'll find a locksmith will stock the relatively rare key pattern, and will also be much cheaper.
I think mine cost about $5 each.
On my keyring is my one and only fob (with no blade) plus a plain ordinary key. I reckon most fob damage occurs when twisting it in the ignition anyway, so mine should last longer this way.
As Kev mentioned, I have memorised my EKA code and how to use it, so I can get away with using the spare plain keys when needed.
I also keep a spare fob battery in the glovebox.;)
A spare fob would be nice though:angel:.

Yes
I was practicing the EKA procedure (with good spare) as my key fob failed... I couldnt get the EKA code horn to sound by turning and holding the key clockwise for 5 or more seconds. After repeated attempts the drivers lock seems to have jammed and failed and is no longer working!
Have ordered a new lock mech.
I did manage to repair the fob circiut board by dousing it in CRC contact cleaner.
I did find out that dead fob will start the engine even after the car was de-immolbilished for a short peroid before the red dash light starts flashing?
Happy days

I bought a new key & Fob from Birtcar-UK, as you would be aware the price is on their site.
That aside I'm also pretty sure I have seen them for $85 on Ebay as well.
What is it with Land Rover owners who decide to sell their cars with only 1 key????

Thanks again for all your replies, all very useful and greatly appreciated...
There is a locksmith in the main centre where I took Lp when the ignition barrel was playing up so will take it there on Saturday to get some keys. I have the books that came w/ LP now so will be going over the finer details ....
Can anyone comment on whether it's a good idea or not to use WD40 on these areas and if so, or not... why, or why not...
1. on the mechanism that should lift up/down the door knob (I know its not a knob but not sure of its technical term)...
2. on the barrel/locking mechanism itself to unlock the door with key driver side?
Thanks again :-D

The mechanism for the door knob (assuming this is the lock button at the top of the door in line with the shoulder as you sit in the car) is actually called the door latch. I would recommend grease as that is what you'll find on it when, if you pull it out. If this is not coming up as it should then grease (or WD40) wont make a difference, you most likely need a new door latch (~$130 and 2 hours).
With regards to the key barrel I would not go near it with WD40. If anything I would recommend graphite grease. The locksmith will definitely stock this. I'm pretty sure this has been discussed on the forum elsewhere so hopefully someone should also confirm this. Pretty sure WD40 will do more damage than good.

Do not use WD40 it goes sticky and makes things worse.
The stuff to use is called INOX. Aussie made to!
Search the threads for "sticky wafers".
Ihad them and needed locksmith via a call out to get me going one day and he included a can of the stuff in the job. This guy disassembled the steering column accessed the lock barrel, took that apart and filed and lubricated all the wafers then put it all back together , about an hour and $350.
Since then regular application has kept all locks sweet.
Ask a LR specialist service centre to recommend a locksmith that knows what they doing re LR it's cheaper in the long run
The girlfriends driver door lock would not work via remote and $200 later and a new lock still no joy so I gave the entire mechanism and links a squirt with INOX and hey presto all worked as new again
Great stuff".
Cheers

Thanks for the reply and sharing your experience with the lock... and thanks also Andrew for your feedback.
I was asking the question re WD40 and wanted to guage feedback as it was the SECOND RACV person who had used WD40 on my lock and door knob when he took the door skin off to investigate what the problem was that the first guy stuffed...
Aside from the door knob not lifting up nor down he has managed to do "something" to the lock so now I can atleast use the key, however... its not anywhere as smooth once the key goes in to unlock it as it use to be... but hey... the WD40 is just something else to bring up w/ the complaints manager now. I have a growing list of issues and concerns and the predicaments we could be in as a result, with 4 young kids any predicament isn't something I want to be in if I am out with them.
I spoke with my insurer also. If RACV end up being a bunch of shmucks and dont fix the damage they did (the least they can do is put it back to its original condition where everything worked like clock work = if they need to buy new parts then so be it)... my insurer said that they will 'certainly' follow it up.
So the saga continues.... i'll do some research on your tips below through the forum.
2 promised phone calls that the complaints manager will call me back have not been received as yet either :-(
Cheers,
Lp

Stumbled across those the other day. Pretty good find. Sounds like the Malaysian & Australian Dealers have something in common. Wanting tons of dosh. I buy my gear from th UK, too hard to resist especially with the exchange rates and the items are delivered within 2 weeks to your door.
You should check out the Britcar-UK website. The keys are $130 - 160 (Aussie Dealers were +$300)

[Aside from the door knob not lifting up nor down]
To lift the knob pull the door handle, first time will lift the knob second time will open the door you can not lift the knob to unlock. You should be able to lock the door with the knob tho.

Hi all - thanks for the replies.
I'm having RACV 'look' at their damage tomorrow...
If the RACV can do what Rod 46 suggested i'll be happy for it being sorted as clearly I have no clue about how to lift a door knob.... and my faith will be restored back in them (NOT!)...
Rod 46 wins hands down tho for having the most amusing reply! :rocket:

Rod's refering to the interior release handle, if the lock button is pushed down, pull the handle as if you wanted to get out. The first pull will unlock the door (button pops up). The second pull will open the door (release the latch).

Thanks clubagreenie, I know what Rod was referring to... sarcasm on my side LOL (no offence taken I hope Rod!).... even doing that, it still did nothing...
Anyhooo.... went to RACV repair center and the rod inside was 'bent'.... so after it was 'straightened' out... and some graphite powder applied to both the knob mechanism and key lock everything is gliding smoothly again... (I hope it stays that way)
I also went out and got x2 sets of keys cut at a cost of $7.00 each, so all I need to do next is find somewhere away from houses & practice the unlock sequence if ever in the event I need it...
again, thanks everyone for your help, comments and feedback... as usual appreciated :-D

Came across a LR Technical Bulletin covering the key blade detaching from the fob. The fix is to glue using Loctite 382 or 411. These are both Cyanoacrylate glues with the 382 being high viscosity, and 411 a high viscosity gap filling adhesive.
If you can't track down the loctite you could substitute a hobby shop glue like Pacer Slo-Zap CA http://www.zapglue.com/Slow.html which is a high viscosity cyanoacrylate with gap filling properties.

16th July 2011, 01:38 PM
I can't remember which is which buy the black loctite adhesive would be the best. It doesn't have the tendency to impact shatter or break, I guess I'm trying to say it's a little more flexible and does gap fill to a degree.
