View Full Version : Rotten egg smell and O2 sensor values

Twice now I have clearly smelled rotten eggs after climbing a range with a trailer. First time I thought it was the flora and fauna, now I suspect Ranger Stacey. Google tells me it happens when cat converter is overwhelmed with rich mixture; which in turn is usually cause by O2 sensors tricking the ECU.
I can tell what the voltages and values coming out the O2 sensors are with my crappy handheld ODBII diagnosticator, but can anyone tell me what the valid range of values are I should be seeing? I cant seem to find them in Rave or on the net so far.
Thanks!
Facts: 2000 4.6, LPG/Fuel (80% of time on LPG), broken blend motors ;)

In my 14CUX and I believe an nearly all O2 sensor cars, the voltages from sensors will rapidly fluctuate between 0 volts and 1volt. The ECU rapidly reacts to the signals and the AVERAGE mixture will be 14.7.
When O2 sensors get old they usually slow down .

The Thor (Motronic) engine management AFAIR allows for 'un lambda controlled' fuelling (IE richer mixtures), under high load conditions to enable aggressive timing advance and efficiency wihout excessive detonation.
At least that is what I remember reading years ago:eek:
That will cause the Cats to stink, normal under those conditions. In fact if they DON'T do that they aren't working right. No chemical / catalyst reaction = no destruction of harmful pollutants. (Hydrogen Sulphide IS pretty harmful to the nose though:()
Our LS430 gets pretty on the nose after a 'brisk' drive:twisted:, it has 4 oxygen sensors, 2 upstream and 2 downstream of the cats, (a pair per bank).

mine has a strong exhaust smell also. Although in Victoria, there's no emission regulation that i'm aware of, which means not having to exchange the cat converter.

in qld full chassis vehicles are classed as commercial and dont need cats, i have none on mine and never get the smell, and that includes towing a 2 tone load up the toowoomba range last week.

Found the O2 sensor values (at RangeRovers.net • View topic - oil leak / running rich (http://bit.ly/klIpUs):)
The sensor can be tested for output by connecting to it a digital voltmeter, set to a 2v scale. Connect the +ve test lead to the sensor signal wire [See wire colours] and the -ve test lead to earth/battery -ve. The voltage produced should swing from app 0.2v to 0.8v and back around once per second. If the voltage is stuck high then the engine is probably running rich for some other reason. If stuck low then usually either a faulty Lambda Sensor, air leak or an engine running very weak for some reason.
