Greased up front hubs.

Howdy,
The girlfriend bought a series 2A (no you cant't have her), The RWC came back with replace brakes as they are stuffed (she did that yesterday) and swivel hubs leaking. i have ball side seals to put in, but when i looked a little closer the drivers side needs the outer? (wheel side) seal also, this is no problem to do. However it has Warn locking hubs (M11 stamped on the thing) and grease nipples on the top of the hub, the drivers side is definitely leaking as it took an hour to clean the grease before she put the new brakes on.

So question. are the Warn hubs supposed to be greased up or oil, and is it a hard job as i haven't done anything with swivel hubs before?

Don't know about the Warn hubs but the swivel seal isn't a big deal to do, but my recommendation is to buy a good workshop manual first.

While the swivel seal is off, is a good time to check the swivel pin pre-load, which may need adjusting

I have Warn hubs, and they do not have grease nipples. Assuming the ones you have are similar, I cannot see why they would need separate lubrication, as the bearings and mechanism are open to the oil in the hub, which in turn is open to the oil in the swivel.

I wonder if the grease nipples have been added to provide a grease barrier to keep oil from leaking round the operating lever (there appears to be no seal there!) or if the hubs and swivels had been converted to grease, leaving the locking hub unlubricated. Note that while grease is reasonably satisfactory for the wheel bearings, use of conventional grease in the swivel housing will result in premature wear of the swivel bushes and bearing.

She gave me the 2 part workshop manual this afternoon. (found it in a box of stuff she got with it) looks pretty easy. with some searching on the m11 locks its not too hard to service them while i'm at it. like all rovers second hand you have to fix what some bag of douche did wrong. (the warn M11's apparently should have oil not grease.)

Bearings, seals, and a good looksee to what else.

Thats what i was afraid of, I will be pulling them apart this week and will be taking pictures along the way. Warn have been great and are sending me a rebuild kit, as the drivers side (the outer seal is definitely leaking) has grease coming out the gap on the errr key. so yet another seal long deteriorated to replace.
Wheel bearings, oil seals, all part of a weekend in series land, or so it seems.
Surprisingly no real surprises, apart from greased front hubs, even the rust spots were expected but not too many found.
I think she got a great little "bertie" :)
